Who is this kid? 15 goals and 25 points in his first 12 games. Doesn't turn 18 until May.
I was able to talk to one of my prospect buddies about him. The description kind of sounds like Colby Barlow from last draft but with less leadership. If he continues this pace (maybe not quite this pace otherwise he won’t be there) but I think he’d be a solid option at our 2nd or potentially NJD 1st

Celebrini might be in a higher tier but the Sharks are in desperate need of a #1 D and with all their best D prospects LD having Levshunov as a RD would be a perfect consolation prize.
Definitely... So much time until the draft, so a huge amount can and will change, but as of now, my hope is we get top 2 and pick Celebrini/Eiserman, but if we pick 3, then it's Levshunov for sure. Or Mews/Dickinson/Silayev at 4 or later. If Silayev stays polarizing, the hope is that we pick 1-2, and then pick him up with Pittsburgh's pick 11-16.

Only end of period 2 so far in MSU vs BC, but my impressions:
  • Gauthier and Levshunov stand out for looking like men among boys. Specifically re: their size+speed and fluidity on the ice.
  • Gauthier is trying too hard.
  • Levshunov, on the other hand, is pretty lackadaisical, at least tonight. He has size and skill and he skates fluidly, and created a few good chances in the O zone, but a number of noticeable times that he drifted out of position and then was a step or two behind the play, notably on the shorthanded goal for BC. He's rangy, has great and fluid edgework, but he's not particularly fast in a straight line and got outskated a few times.
  • Smith is skating reasonably well - he's not the fastest but he finds open and dangerous ice and he is displaying offensive shiftiness and creativity as advertised. He also tends to lose the puck battles on the boards, but he's engaging in them. His spin-around snipe was a good shot, should probably have been saved but it was sneaky. Good to have 2pts on the night. It's total "hopium" but it does seem like he'll benefit from playing at a higher level, because there's just so much ugly puck bouncing, losing of possession in this game. Some players play up when the level of play elevates and I hope he's one of them.
EDIT end of 3rd:
  • Smith had a great assist on the PP to Gauthier. Shifty, deceptive, and then a great pass. Generally looked like he was in the action, finding space, encouraging to watch.
  • Levshunov wasn't super impressive to me, if for nothing else, just doesn't seem to care. Last shift of the game, he was all over the ice and working hard, made a few good passes that his teammates failed to corral... if he shows more effort in other games, great, otherwise, a little concerning to me for a potential 3OA pick, which is likely where we end up picking.

Scouting reports and stats for Sam Dickinson look intriguing. Has anyone here watched him play? Possible all situations #1 defenseman potential?

Wheeler at the Athletic has him at #9 or #10 overall, "tier 4" with a high floor and "a high ceiling with good development," but he's young so we should learn a lot this year. If he has a great year, maybe he's in the top 5 and in our window.

The sharks are kind of f***ed if they dont draft top 3 again. They really need that #1 pick and another top 5 next year.
It all comes down to lottery luck. Until last year the Ducks hadn't won the lottery in their rebuild (and they finished dead last so they still dropped a spot) and the Red Wings never did in their rebuild.

I agree though, drafting top 3 is huge. Any one of Celebrini, Levshunov, Eiserman, Catton, or Demidov and I'm happy. The first 2 to a bigger extent though.

After one game, acknowledging I'm an amateur and not a pro, I didn't love Levshunov's effort. Wheeler's write-up says "with a little ambition, ceiling is sky high." I want to hear about / see that ambition before I'm stoked about him.

I'm just really hoping this Silayev kid has a great year and cracks the top 3. Him and Mukh would be twin towers in the back. But I'd prefer Macklin or Eiserman as of today.

Not sold on Catton or Demidov yet.

Maybe Silayev can drop till 11 with the Pens first.

Levshunov is incredibly raw. He wasn’t good yesterday, but frankly as a whole Michigan State was incredibly outclassed. He needs a better first step and to refine his decisions with the puck, but both of those things are fixable in my eyes.

I like to see young guys going crazy experimenting with the puck. As they get older, that decision-making becomes more conservative as they find out what does and doesn’t work against professionals, but I’d much rather see a guy attempting high-skill plays when he’s 17 than making the safe but low-upside play every time. It was one of the reasons I liked Leo Carlsson so much last year.

If Levshunov puts it together, he could be a star, but there’s a significant risk that he doesn’t.

All in all… it’d be nice if the Sharks got #1.

The more I read/watch highlights of Celebrini the more excited I get. But it sounds like any of the top 3 will be a huge prize and unless something magical happens I can’t see the Sharks not being the worst team in the league this year.

I like Dickinson. I don’t think he has 1D potential but I also think he’s the type of guy that would outperform his potential. I know we (general we) have talked about wanting a two way top pair D like a McAvoy and I think Dickinson is the closest to that in this draft.

That was the sense that I got just from reading some scouting reports on him. If we don't land Celebrini I hope we pick one of the defensemen.

To me it wasn't the decision making, it was the floating. Even late in the game there was a shift where he didn't skate with the rush and instead tried to hook the hands of the BC forward backchecking in front of him. It was men's league level... Again, only my first time watching but I'll want to see a lot more. You are definitely right that we want 1/2, just unfortunately only a 44% chance of that if we likely end up worst.

Right. Celebrini may not be Bedard, but he’s a far better prospect than any other recent #1 overall. I’d easily take him over Slafkovsky/Cooley/Wright, Power/Beniers, or Lafreniere/Byfield/Stutzle. I think he’s a better prospect than Jack Hughes was at he same age, though obviously Hughes has simply decimated his draft-year projection by now.
