HF Habs: 2024 NHL Draft Thread

If you think shot selection isn't a part of hockey IQ I think we may have a different opinion on what the term means. I would think about decision making quality + speed, space mapping, timing, predicting and reading the play before it unfolds etc. way before I would ever think about hand eye coordination, but I'm certainly no expert in the subject.

I don't even know how many times this year I saw Matheson totally ignore a wide open Slafkovsky set up for a one timer to take a totally unforced point shot with no lane open that was subsequently blocked. I don't know if I would say that his IQ must be good or else he wouldn't be on the PP when I believe it says more about the quality of our team and having no other better options. He's certainly one of the better offensive dmen in the league but I would attribute it to his all-world skating and physical traits.

Active ignorance or conscious ignorance. This is why this isn't always about IQ because it's a situation where the not doing something is active and Matheson is the general having to think 1 pass ahead. And then the player receiving the first pass need to do something predictable and the play Matheson has planned. This is why a rookie like Slafkovski often gets ignored even completely opened, That will change over time as players gain trust in Slaf's finishing/passing/play reading abilities.

I agree IQ plays a role in it (plays a role in everything really), but you have to be aware that what you are judging is in a effect risk management calculations over multiple plays.

You're the first person I see labeling Celebrini as generational

He's on that line between Generational and Franchise, I think given his skating and defensive game, he will have a generational impact. For example, I can imagine a matchup Celebrini/Bedard not turning in Connor's favor at all. The thing is, most of the players in the next few drafts, and the players that will be left when Celebrini will be in his prime (McDavid/MacKnnon/Mathews out, Hughes/Hagens/Bedard/McKenna/Jacobson in) all have a smaller bodies. In his cohort Celebrini will be a fast skating giant.

The coming of Demigod! It has been foretold (by a couple of different mocks)!

Keep the faith! Hold true! Heretics and non believers are among us and will try to sway you! Look to the Twitter Video of his height and weight! Look to the puff pieces about his great english and wanting to come over right away!

Do not despair! Praise Demigod!

Chris Peters mocks Demidov to Habs at 5.
I really hope so. I hope all these mocks having Demidov to the Habs at 5 and us getting our hopes up a bit that it just may happen doesn't end with a team ahead of the Habs or another team trading into the top 4 and doing this to us.

I’ll take a crack at posting my top 10:

1- Celebrini
2- Demidov
3- Dickinson
4- sennecke
5- Lindstrom
6- Buium
7- Levshunov
8- iginla
9- Parekh
10- Hutson

Yes I like Cole that much. It is what it is and I’ll own my ranking.
Hey I get it. I had Lane at 10 in 2022 but I liked his game better than Cole's.

With the 5th OA pick, the montreal canadiens are proud to select :

1- Demidov
2- Dickinson or BUIUM
3- Lindstrom

IMO, if Demidov is off the board and one of BUIUM or DICKINSON is still available, you can't take a forward.

Hughes and Gorton are paid millions to be good asset managers. So, we need to take the best player available no matter what.

If we take Dickinson, Guhle becomes irrelevant.
If we take BUIUM, Hutson becomes irrelevant.

Though we need an elite forward and I'm not sure Zegras, Necas or Laine are what we need.

Generational is too much but he is ainec a franchise C. Top 10 in the league at his position. Dont think Carlsson upside is farther than this tho.

Imo, both teams keep their franchise C and Anaheim certainly does not pay 3rd overall for it.

In a vacuum, i think Carlsson and the 3rd is more value but i don't think San Jose has any interest in trading away its franchise player.

_______________

Personal ranking :

1. Celebrini
2. Buium
3. Demidov
4. Silayev
5. Parekh
6. Lindstrom
7. Tij
8. Levshunov
9. Dickinson
10. Catton
11. Sennecke
12. Eiserman

In the Habs position. I would pick Tij and Lindstrom ahead of Parekh tho. But not the rest.

I don't know man, personally the thought of having Buium/Hutson on the ice for 40+min/game should be a f***ing nightmare for the opposition.

These guy are insane puck mover, transition player especially surrounded by dman like Reinbacher and Guhle.

Buium - Reinbacher
Hutson - Guhle

There is no one irrelevant here and its exciting as f***.

Just read a bit of the Hawks draft thread and they seem to want Demidov very badly. If the Hawks go with Levshunov there might be a bit of an angry mob over there on draft night.

Also saw this in the draft thread on the CBJ board. Do the Jackets need more wingers though? :dunno:

I've been on HF for almost 20 years and this was the first time I can ever remember being on the Hawks or CBJ board here on HF.

Iginla or Buuim.

Was just wondering what the fans from these teams were saying about who they'd like their respective teams to pick.

Might try and find my way over to the Ducks board sometime later. Don't think I've ever been on the Ducks board here before either. :)
It's a very small, select group.

I've been reading this thread on and off for the past 3 weeks as I'm vacationing in Tunisia and I came to the conclusion - the Habs want none of any of these players as they're all extremely flawed and will bust in one way or another according to various posters in here.

Forfeit the pick. It's the only way.
