Seems like the Predators feel the same way...
If they feel that way, then they should trade him to the Hawks for a 2nd round pick, in division or not.

The way they actually feel is that they overplayed their hand. Hoped someone would move a top 10 pick for him, nobody balked because you don't trade top 10 picks for unproven players at the NHL level unless you're trying to get fired. He's consistently held good value, but as is the case with prospects, the value usually comes in terms of what how they could be viewed by a team trading away an established player, and less so what a team moving picks would trade away.

lmfao Askarov is absolutley going to be a good goalie, obviously Nashville won't entertain us but some eastern team will be blessed

There are reasons why the Predators didn't think Askarov was part of the future plan...demanding a trade when you didn't even start AHL playoff games isnt a flex.

Askarov started multiple playoff games

Also, Askarov was drafted by previous regime. Trotz was not with organization

It's not uncommon for new regime to not be fans of top prospects they inherit. Some terrible trades in NHL history have been result of new regime mistakes

He played well in front of a great team. He lost his net in the playoffs to Troy Grosenick. Nashville said he isnt ready for the NHL...I get he is stuck behind Saros but Askarov isnt so good that he should be demanding a trade and a spot on an NHL roster yet.

Crawford lost his net to Scott Darling in 2014-15 for a few games and then came back

Askarov did same. Bad first game and then sat when team fell down 0-2 in series, Askarov came back in 2nd round taking over game 2 winning both games 2 and 3 then got hurt in game 4.

You know once upon a time Saros lost his net to Marek Mazanec in AHL. And Bobrovsky was benched for Brian Boucher and Michael Leighton in NHL playoffs

And Preds intentionally blocking his development and limiting his path to NHL (And blocking him from #1 job in Nashville for at least 4-5 years) certainly makes his trade demand reasonable

We should try to be all over this. A very good goalie prospect is a need even with Commesso/Gajan.

Would be a tremendous add to fill one more hole.

The Wolves started Alex Lyon over Kochetkov in the Calder Cup finals.
Alex Lyon played extremely well for Florida and Detroit last year too, but also things sometimes like who starts can be obfuscated. They could have sent Kochetkov down so he would be eligible if Carolina got knocked, but still have him ready for the NHL given the injury circus between Andersen and Raanta for example (or Lyon was hot & their guy, and they wanted to get the kid settled into the states.) In that

They went a long ways to get kotch finagling him through customs, and he started his first NHL game near the end of April that year before he was sent down. It was a crisis iirc and he shows up gets a cup of coffee and then goes 5-1 in the yoffs for the wolves, Lyon went 9-3. I actually am surprised by this I really thought he was their starter moving forward postmodern tandem style be dammed because of their injuries, from my statwatching Kotch is a consistent workhorse.

like another poster said they honestly could use more offense over goaltending especially with their second line being in rough shape. But next year will be a development/tank year I imagine anyways for them.

Pass on Askarov.

Guy was super hyped in his draft class but if you look at his actual body of work since, it's not impressive. A bad and a pedestrian WJC. Played like 25-30 total games in Russian, split between 3 leagues, during the Covid years and followed that up with two good, not great, AHL seasons.

Commesso's saving percentage was 0.5% lower than Askarov's last year.

Bingo. Why give up assets when you have a similar caliber prospect in that spot already?

No one who is smart thinks they are even close to similar caliber prospects.

This. I like Commesso but he doesn't have Askarov's talent. It's a lazy argument to say "well this guy is only __ % lower" or "well this guy only has __ points less" when their are other variables. Watch them both play. I've seen Askarov steal many games. His size, athleticism, hockey sense, lateral movement, skating, etc. are all there.

See the average hockey fans sees Askarov make some highlight reel save and think that is great athleticism and goaltending. The educated hockey fan sees Askarov misreading the play and being out of position and having to make an incredible save to save his ass. In the day and age of highlights I get it. Barry Trotz doesn't think he is NHL ready...neither does Andrew Brunette...nor does Mitch Korn who is a goalie guru - that's says a lot - the kid still needs development.

Milwaukee was a far superior team to the Ice Hogs - any hockey fan who watched the AHL will tell you that. Askarov lost his net to the incredible Troy Groserick in the playoffs. Add in the off ice and on ice antics and there are red flags here that are concerning. He hasn't dominated in the AHL and now won't report to try to win a job? Askarov has been on the trade block for over a year.....lost his net in the AHL and now is demanding an NHL spot isnt a great look IMO. Go earn it.

LOL, yes, every great save he has made was because he was out of position, you are just way too smart for the rest of us.

Can you point out where it says these guys dont think he is NHL ready? Why would they bring him up for a couple games during the season if they think that? (Where he had a 0.943sv%). No one is saying he is 100% NHL ready to take on a starting role, and no one is saying he doesn't need more development, he's 22 years old lol

Lots of goalies lose their net for short periods of time throughout the year, its the ups and downs of goalies, any smart hockey fan knows this. Also, when did he demand an NHL spot?

Oilers now have a massive gap at RD heading into the season. I imagine Stan will have heavy interest in Murphy close to the trade deadline. Not many RD will be available and it’s the last year of McCabe’s retention as well if that was an issue for the Hawks.

I thought of Murphy as well. He does have a NTC though, so who knows if he would want to uproot his family and go to Edmonton.

Since Stunley has already traded for a ND alumni and a busting high former 1st rounder this week, the only move left is to lose a trade for Saad and play him at RD.

An important point is AHL teams don't really have "Starter/Backup" as well. The whole schedule is basically back to back weekend games so teams are going back and forth on goaltenders the whole season. It's not like a $6 million starter/$1 million backup. AHL teams will be pretty quick-triggered to make a switch in the playoffs accordingly.

"Askarov had told the team he would not report to the AHL this season and had requested a trade.".......seems pretty cut and dry.

when you go on the ahl website and filter 2023-24 goalie stats by "qualified goalies"' askarov is 17th in sv% and commesso is 27th. that .5% is the difference between being a statistically mediocre to below average ahl starter and statistically amoung the worst ahl starters.
