No if the Jays win we play the Rays at the Trop. We hold the tie breaker with the Astros so they can’t pass us if we win
In the scenario given (Houston and Toronto win and Texas loses), all three teams end up with same record. So, first the AL West winner is determined. Houston gets that since they have the tiebreaker with Texas and Texas becomes a WC team. Then WC2 and WC3 are d determined. Texas has the tiebreaker with Toronto and gets WC2, leaving WC3 for Toronto.

Considering Houston has something to play for tomorrow (the AL West title), it would be in the Jays best interest to lose to Tampa Bay tomorrow?
I imagine Toronto will be resting everyone they can tomorrow. Belt is probably the only sure thing because of how long he was off.
But Tampa is in a similar situation so we won’t exactly be facing their A lineup.

Beyond that the chips fall where they fall

Not to mention the times when they choked. IN 85' the Jays were expected to win against KC, and did go up 3-1. Unfortunately for Toronto, that just happened to be the year where they extended the ALCS to best-of-7 from best-of-5, and the Jays proceeded to lose the final 3 games.

Then in 87' the Jays had won the first 3 of the 4 game series with division rivals Detroit. The Jays then proceeded to blow their final 7 games in a row, while I believe Detroit went 5-2, to clinch the AL East title on the final game of the season. I believe they were also ahead of Boston in 1990 until the final week, and ended up finishing a game behind.

We used to call them the "choke Jays" up until 1992, since they had a nasty habit of choking when it counted for nearly a decade.

In 1989 they came back to beat Baltimore for the AL East title, unfortunately they got ass hammered by the Oakland A’s. Rickey Henderson made the Blue Jays his biatch that series.

It’s funny I grew up on the 80s / 90s jays and I definitely remember them having a good reputation as a successful / dependable team especially in comparison to the leafs at the time.

the one thing that I saw recently which really took me aback was a list of MLB teams who have never one a championship. The 3 that really stood out for me were Tampa, Texas rangers, and saN Diego.

fukking Tampa for all their amazing success for so many years (they really have been one of the best run organizations in the league the last 20 years) has never won. crazy.

No no you're right. The Blue Jays do have the tiebreaker over Houston. If the Blue Jays win tomorrow they clinch the wc2

Well in fairness, the Leafs of the 80s were horrible. Believe it or not, by the late 80s, the Jays were clearly the #1 sports team in the city, considering Harold Ballard had driven the Leafs into the ground.

From 1991-2005, the Atlanta Braves had by far, the best record in baseball, and had an insane 15 year playoff appearance streak (if we are to assume the 94' season was not cancelled). However, with the exception of 1995, they always seemed to come up short. As a side note, it was much easier to win a World Series if a team made the playoffs 30 years ago, as opposed to today.

Edit: Ohhh wait. I forgot about the potential three-way tie between Houston Toronto and Texas. So if Houston and the Blue Jays win tomorrow and Texas loses then that would give Houston the AL West. Texas the WC2 and the Blue Jays the WC3.

I don’t think I want WC3 in a scenario when Houston wins the West. Is Minnesota then Houston even easier than Tampa then Baltimore? If it’s Minnesota then Texas I’m all for it.

Before this weekend i wanted Seattle to get eliminated because they were obnoxious last year and this.

But after Texas dropped the first 2 and it made us sweat, i wanted the Jays to win today and watch Texas lose this lead having to play a meaningful game tomorrow.

However, happy Seattle didnt make it. If you thought the Jays were frustrating, look at what happened to the Mariners;

On July 1st, Seattle was 39-42. 10 GBs of the division and 4th only ahead of Oakland.

On July 31st they were 55-51, still 4th and they sold at the deadline.

One month later, on August 31st, the Mariners went on a 21-6 streak and were 76-57 and first in the division.

With only 29 games left, Seattle ONLY needed to go 14-15 (sub .500) to get to 90 wins and make the playoffs AND the division.

Instead, Seattle went 11-17 so far.

The Mariners were 3rd in baseball in wins from July 1st to now;

1. Dodgers: 53
2. Baltimore: 52
3. Mariners: 49

Look at their month to month;

Talk about fumbling the bag. This is an epic collapse and it is great.

True. Not to mention Baltimore‘s closer out with TJ surgery.

It looks so good on the Mariners to soil themselves so badly. They have become incredibly irritating in a few different ways.

The Twins were 18-9 in September.

The Rays have also maintained a good record but they are without McClanahan, Franco, Rasmussen and Springs. That’s gotta catch up at some point. Maybe now.

Give me Tampa.

Yeah I think most of the trepidation against playing the Rays is just PTSD from years of them abusing us. Even when they were terrible.
But really that doesn’t mean anything for a potential series full of players who had no part in that.

Man, the AL looks so open this year with all of the injuries. Atlanta-Dodgers might be the real world series matchup this year, altough Atlanta is beat up too.

You know what? Being a long-suffering Toronto sports fan, I usually don't kick other teams or fan bases when they're down because I know what pain is. But considering how obnoxious Mariners fans have been over the last 12 months, I'm going to make an exception here and enjoy their downfall. LMFAO

i have a feeling Rays rest a bunch of players tomorrow. Buck discussed it after the Jays loss this afternoon that Cash would rest some guys. I really dont want to play the Rays, just cant stand them, they're always so tough against us.

For it to be Minnesota then Texas, the Jays need to lose while Texas and Houston both win.

Incidentally, here are the records of the Jays versus each of the other AL playoff teams:

Tampa Bay 6-6 (1 left to play) (3-4 at The Trop where all games would be played).
Minnesota 3-3 (1-2 at Target Field)
Baltimore 3-10
Texas 1-6
Houston 4-3

Yeah we lose our way into the playoffs, so Blue Jay-ish, I think most of us could have predicted that in the big game the team chokes and allows another team to do their job for them. We are fortunate that Seattle's opponent had something to play for, otherwise we don't make the playoffs. If Texas already had the West locked up before that series began, they are probably resting their regulars and there is most likely a different outcome in that series. The only way the Jays win the next round is if our opponent plays so shitty we by default win. Perhaps the least deserving team in the playoffs.

- Tips for hitting - if the ball is in the dirt, above your head or in the opposing batters box it's probably a ball, dont swing. Shatkins you can fire your 65 hitting coaches because they are not doing jack to help this team.
- Tips for base running - If your name is Vlad or Kirk, you are as slow as a fat earth worm, take one base at a time, if you think you can take 2 bases, you can't, dont, just dont be a hero on the base paths.
- Tips for pitching - if you are in a jam you'll have to call your manager out the mound, he has no f-ing clue how to manage a game, you will have to tell him when to change pitchers.

Pathetic "team".

The team did have to win a game or two themselves to make the playoffs btw.

I’ll miss the game today, but a win in a semi meaningless game makes this about as perfect a season as they could have had.

The team motto for this off-season should be “ Diet for Dunedin”

See you at TD Ballpark in late February.

Agreed, also I was at the game yesterday and Schneider is just flat out a bad manager. His deployment of the bullpen yesterday was a disgrace. Garcia could have played two innings, he looked good. I would have went Garcia 7th/8th. Romano 9th. I just felt we had control of the game up until Swanson but I have no idea why he felt necessary to use up just about every arm he could.
