Hughes said Michkov had a good interview and he was mature. Martineau talked with him for 10 minutes and said there was no attitude during that time.

A bunch of teams are trying to move up.

No one else, other than Nicolishin, has corroborated the bad attitude thing but WSH is nevertheless trying to move up to grab him.

Smoke and mirrors.

If the Habs pass on Michkov it’s because someone like Smith or Carlsson is available.

Can you imagine passing on a guy that comes over in 3 years and starts posting 90+pts seasons?
But karakter and grit, and Tkackuk-lite Leonard, or the "best" defenseman of this draft (since there are apparently no good defensemen for next draft).

Why go for a potential 100+ pt player when you can get a miniature-sized power forward who will be AMAZING on our 3rd line?! Or better yet: get that 3 RHD we desperately need!

Why would Carlsson fall to 5, if he's that good ? We should pass on him too... :sarcasm:
Why draft anyone aside form 1 OA? It always means they were fallers! Trade the pick. Trade the pick for money, why would other teams give you players? What theyre not good enough for them?

Matter of fact just fold the franchise.

its what I have been saying for weeks. MM makes so much sense for Anaheim. At the same time though, Fantilli is fantilli.
I hope Benson is sitting on the ground here.
Short torso long leg gang. Thats the real athlete build that allowed me to run a 4.64 40 yard dash at 19, about 11 years ago.

Yes, I will plug my athletic feats any time I can.

As Barry Trotz, general manager of the Nashville Predators, previously pointed out, the Canadiens hold the key to the draft.

It seems increasingly clear that there are only two possible scenarios for the Canadian: either they choose Matvei Michkov with their fifth overall selection, or they exchange this choice with another team in a monster transaction.
Yeah. That was said before the interviews with Michkov I think.

So seeing he is doing well in them and that he is in NSH, the idea that Michkov goes #4 is back. Combine that with CLB that also like Smith… means Carlsson could drop to #5.

Smith is gone. Finished. Nada. Not a possibility anymore.
We know the two possible top-5s available are down to either Carlsson or Michkov at 5OA.

They do already have two franchise centers in Zegras and McTavish. So it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that they go winger with Michkov.

But as you say, Fantilli isn't an easy guy to skip over. They could always move one of them to the wing.

Yep. After reviewing tape and hearing all these rumors, I'm finding very hard to defend passing over Michkov. I wont bash the player they'll select, as I like a number of them after 5, but management will be under the spotlight for a few years if they do that.

In the end I would be surprised if they did, unless someone like Carlsson was somehow available. The interviews have all gone well, so far as we know. But ultimately I don't think he is there at 5 unless there's some red flags we don't know about, and if that's the case I think he falls a lot.

If the Habs do indeed have 5 offers on the table for teams to move up to 5 (to most likely grab Michkov) I also hope that makes them realize that maybe, just maybe they should stay @ 5 and take the guy themselves if that many teams want the guy that badly.
I think they're looking at it like

90-100 point player.

70-80 point player
40-50 point player.

Habs need a game breaker. Caufield's shot might be that, but adding another one that can actually be a game breaker would be huge.

The way Hughes seems to be trying to build the team is have a bunch of good or really good players that the team is deep and not carried by a few high-end players.

The 4OA was the best option to move up but that window may have never been open.

As per Seravalli:

“Sources say the Canadiens have placed at least one call to the Sharks to inquire about swapping slots, but the belief is Sharks GM Mike Grier was unwavering in his desire to keep the pick.”

Moving up is definitely off the table even if it was always a long shot.

what would Trevor do?

Tell the kid that brings them snacks that they should never bring chips to the table.

People like to say "no you can't excuse management if Michkov busts or doesn't come over" but I personally would. We got TONS of forwards in the pipeline and a guy like Leonard might be our 5th best forward. The benefit of having Suzuki/CC/Dach/Slaf/Roy/Newhook/Mesar (who I'm not entirely ruling out yet) means we can afford to take this kind of gamble and even though it would suck if it amounts to nothing, passing up on elite player would hurt even more. Not to mention that we will be able to make more trades/signings for legit top 6 players, but doing so for a star player is pretty much impossible.

I'm not really buying the "douchey" vibe that Michkov has apparently. A kid getting mad at his teammates for not being good enough tells me he has fire and willingness to win, that can be adjusted. You goy guys like McKinnon supervising their teammates' eating habits. The lack of plus skating is not ideal, but it doesn't seem bad enough to hold him back a lot. A poor defensive and overall game? Kucherov has to be the most nonchalant player in the league where he straight up doesn't give a f*** that he directly causes a goal against because he's got the talent to have his team score 3 goals to make up for it.

Seravalli has Habs 5th puck as 5th on his trade targets list.

Though, I'm sure y'all want to wait until someone posts it from Twitter 2 hours from now 🤣
