Debrusk plays PP, PK, and is a very good 5v5 defender on top of being a goal scorer, that is the opposite of a one dimensional player. You're saying we haven't watched Pageau, but I'm starting to think you might've had your eyes closed every time Debrusk was on the ice this season.

Who started this rumor?

I could show you with stats. But I can’t show you my eyes. So how can this be proved to you?

It can't be.

What does Debrusk do to make you think he is a very good defender? He's not good along the boards in the defensive zone. Doesn't block shots, doesn't steal pucks. Decision making isn't great when he has the puck.

I don't see it.

I’m surprised so many people are penciling in a hanifin trade. Defence is. Strength on this team. Centre is a the issue on paper at this point. Why would the bruins trade for D?

I guess we all just better pray Locmelis is a #2 centre and poitras is a #1. I don’t think either will play this season but I think Bergeron is back and I don’t think the situation is as dire as ppl are making it out to be.

Pageau is a defensive centre who can elevate his game in the playoffs. He is also 30. Has never scored 50 points. Has 3 years left on his contract. Ect. No way they move secondary scoring (JDB) to add an aging, smallish third line centre with term on his contract.

Jake will not be dealt. They dealt Hall that shows me who they value more up front. They could have got the world for jake debrusk in a trade I’m sure.

I think his two way game has definitely improved, but could definitely be better, but I find myself cursing Pasta and Marchand for some brutal and lazy giveaways more often than Debrusk.Bertuzzi was a nightmare defensively but we all mostly wanted him back.

Agreed.

Like most NHL players, Jake has improved somewhat defensively with experience. Certainly Pasta & Marchand can be turnover machines. I don't consider that defensive play as that usually happens when they are carrying the puck. Pasta was credited with an incredible 109 giveaways last season. A season where he scored 61 goals and was the runner-up for the Hart Trophy. He also was credited with 52 takeaways.

Wingers generally have the least defensive responsibilities, so it's not as crucial as centers and obviously defensemen. And in Debrusk's case it doesn't hurt that he's played with one of the best defensive centers of all-time for the last couple of seasons.

Here are two different models showing his defensive impact. These are percentiles - so compared to other forwards. As you said earlier, you can’t watch forwards in all teams around the league, so models like this are helpful. But feel free to disregard.

Thank you, I will.

That said, how dumb is it to buy into projections for next season? That tells me absolutely nothing about Jake's defensive ability.

They don’t make it up out of thin air. It’s based on prior results. Which indicate strong defensive play from Debrusk.

How do you assess the defensive ability of any player on another team? How do you compare Jake to them?

Baloney. What prior results? How much time the team has the puck when he's on the ice with Bergeron?

I've been watching hockey for over 60 years. So I'm simply comparing Jake to my impression of what a good defensive forward would play like. He's no Eddie Westfall or Rick Middleton.

DeBrusk speed, smarts and hands all factor in to top defensive player

I’d like to see DeBrusk & Coyle be the first PK group - you have that element of offense added in to two of the smartest forwards in the league

You see the Bruins play all the time.

Do you consider Debrusk a top defensive player 5 on 5?

He absolutely does steal pucks and is very good on the boards, maybe you're thinking of Covid years Debrusk?

I was surprised he graded so high top 20% - but I consider him a plus defender probably top third

He’s got such a great stick/hands he is adept at getting the puck out of zone - A grade at this

He also is Uber underrated passer especially in own zone getting puck to a teammate

Top No but good and improved- he’s also a savy opportunistic PK

I’m Sweens or Goldie I fax over 6/40 FNM 1-4 and years modified right now

I’m a big fan of DeBrusk - he’s a solid top 4 winger

Extreme complimentary player to Marchand & Bergeron because he is not intimidated of playing with them

A great line

Can someone remind me why we're arguing about Jake Debrusk's skills defensively?

Interesting. I thought Bertuzzi’s turnover on Duclair’s goal was a pretty brutal defensive play.

I also didn’t know you had to be good defensively to be nominated for the Hart Trophy.

You say wingers have the least defensive responsibility then disregard turnovers as defensive play. Puck possession is good defense.
