Wood at 13
Honzek at 14
But at 24
No idea on Wood, I'll trust you've seen something. The skating looks bad bad though.

I want to hate But because Grant is in love with him, but I'm sold after watching like 20mins of his MHL playoffs  . The physical package is just exceptional. The confidence, motor, and willingness to use his size and reach is unique in this class from the players I've seen. He's got lots to improve in terms of shooting and choosing his spots to flash the skill, but there's a lot to like. Already really strong and engaged defensively - I can see a bit of Nichushkin in there. If others haven't seen it:

Watched Honzek live - used his reach but doesn't use his size. Got caught being a bit passive. Seemed like a smart player with a lot of growing to do both physically and in his overall game. I think he ends up on the wing as I didn't see enough from him as a facilitator. Reminds me a bit of Brown from a couple years ago? If it were my list, I'd think top-15 might be a bit high as I don't see a clear path toward him being a top end offensive contributor without incorporating more engaged physical play into his game at the next level.

The Habs marketing team would go bananas with a name like 'But' on the team.

Isn't Danielson up there?
No in my top 15 and not a top skater.

But is a bust. He doesnt have the tools or the production... What are you drafting? A 6'5 with great hands that cant produce in one of the weakest MHL season Ive seen? Meh.

Trust, I love overhyping russian from the MHL. But, Gulyayev and Simashev arent impressive.

Wood is 100% ahead and Im pretty sure hes not even that much slower than But. Id rather gamble on Haltunnen if we want a big guy.

Very good for tankers too, "Cest l'but" (its pronounced Boute)

True, PPG in the MHL is something to build off of, it's not great. It's a weird league and I don't know how to contextualize it accurately compared to junior leagues or other non-premier mens leagues. Yurov and Miroschnichenko are a touch over PPG. Same for Gulyayev. It seems to fluctuate a fair bit year over year as well.

I think he's still growing into his frame and I'd project that scoring upside becoming more apparent in the next couple of years as he refines the tools. I can't compare him to Wood because I haven't really seen him, but he's quicker and appears more physically engaged than Honzek in a more physically imposing league. Not the same offensive tools, doesn't read the play at the same level and his shot doesn't measure up.

I think he's got too much going on to be a Bu(s)t. If he can skate, play defence, keep up with the play, and hit once in a while, and keep his motor running consistently, he's going to find a job in the NHL. I think he could creep into the top-20 just for the simple fact he uses his size and flashes some upside. The three MHL guys are going to be really interesting to see where they end up.

The WHL is a more physical league than the MHL.

Maybe Arthyukin. I dont see it really. Hes gonna be overdrafted because he has sick hands and a huge frame, Im good after 35ish, but not before. If im drafting a russian its Rykov. Size, skill, smart, production and he's versatile + super young.

Sounds like another Dorofeyev type of guy. Not the same offensive skillset but he has one of the most transferable games in the draft.

And like I said, if I want to gamble on a big guy, my choice is Haltunnen. Moves around better than But, has a better shot than But, has a nose for the net and plays a power game and hes a very hard worker. The thing is his production in Liiga is bad, but weve just picked a guy with 8 more points in 15 more games there, I dont see why we wouldnt pick him in the 2nd.

Hes like Armia if Armia wasnt a lazy POG and slow as hell. Unsure if he has the same brain limitations as Armia, tough to know.

One thing that has really gone our way is the incredible ascent of our young defenders. Guhle, Xhekaj, Harris, Barron and Kovasevic have all looked good to great at various points in the show as rookies this year. Then you’ve got Mailloux and Hutson (and to a lesser degree Engstrom) going nuclear in the system. Our D outlook has gone from awful to arguably better than the forwards lol

And that matches up with this draft which is looking like an incredible forward draft. We have a chance to add two great forwards with our pick and Floridas. A little lottery luck and I’d dare say we have one of the best young rosters in the league.

I agree and that is why I think we need to pick 2 Fw at around 12th I think that a D will be in the conversation for BPA but there will still be a player that could be just as good or better than 6th. Best exemple is Glass and Suzuki. We are set on D, we are already in position to move Edmundson and we have Hutson and Engstrom in then pipeline.

No way Habs are set on D they still don t have a top cornerstone D. Looking at last ten years SC winners :
COL : Makar (4OA)
TBL : Hedman (2OA)
STL : Pietrangelo (4OA)
WSH : Carlson (27OA)
PIT : Letang (62 OA)
CHI : Keith (54 OA)
LAK : Doughty (2 OA)

The two exceptions are PIT and CHI who had such offensive powerhouse (and great goaltending in the playoffs) they could compensate for having weaker top D but in their cup years, Letang and Keith were always key players.

I don t see MTL having that guy yet. Guhle has potential but he is getting injured a lot :(

They are certainly set on the left side, but Reinbacher is a viable pick for the right side. Thinking about a future Hutson pairing and Barron or Mailloux isn't an attractive option to allow him to do his thing.

I agree with everyone though, the primary objective should be a forward talent if one is there.
