I think the game simply passed DW and the old guard on how they built out the team and roster. When the Giants cleaned house they put a ton of emphasis on development and scouting and MG did the same.

MG has a type of payer/team he wants to build and is accuring payers that fit the mold. DW just chased players and playing style that won a cup

From the EP guide. This seems like the draft a Grier/Marchant clone pick.

On a loaded Youngstown Phantoms squad, Brandon Svoboda wasn’t
tasked with much offensive creation. But the highs were just as
impressive as the bigger names around him, making him a solid
candidate for mid-round pick.
The standard Svoboda games goes something along these lines:
Battling around the net-front, getting open inside space, hard work on
the forecheck, proactive defence, and one display of exciting passing
display.
Some of the plays he pulls off are complex, passes that require
vision, confidence, and manipulating the defender to create the lane.
He also has a powerful outside leg wrister, narrowing his stance and
putting his body weight behind the shot.
At this stage, it’s hard to project Svoboda to the NHL. He’s just so
raw. He lacks puck protection ability, failing to win body positioning
and keep defenders on his back.
Underdeveloped edges fail him when pressured. Decisions don’t
occur fast enough, he lacks quickness as a skater, and he’s not
especially adaptable.
Given that, Svoboda’s a long-term projection. But with clear NHL
abilities, perhaps a patient, development-focused team could nab a
capable bottom-six forward

In the end, it's a Sharks 3rd round pick so all we did was basically guarantee this poor guy has no NHL career.
Gushchin only needs to play 10 more NHL games to be the most successful skater selected by the Sharks in the 3rd round since 19 freaking 93.

That level of inefficiency is impressive. You'd think that Burke would've learned something in his 30 years with the Sharks about drafting in the middle rounds, but here we are.

Slag on DWJr's tenure all you want, but these are the kinds of decisions from the "old guard" that drive me nuts. Trade up to reach by 30+ picks. I hope they know something nobody else does.
I've always wondered if a trade up has ever actually hit for us....I can't think of a single time it's led to an NHL regular.

I would have not been mad if we didn't use two picks to trade up for Svoboda... just looks like a very bad pick management

EDIT: I meant if Sharks drafted him with their own 3rd round without trading it would have been more okay...
