No way Slaf goes ahead of Smith

Smith had 127 points in 60 games thats x2 the points

at WJC he had 20 points in 7 games thats almost x3 the points

Will is so much more talented then Juraj theres good chances he goes #3 on a much better draft filled with elite and franchise players
I don't disagree with him being drafted above Slaf but lets stop throwing random pts numbers as an ultimate prof otherwise the ranking would look like this:

Bedard
Perrault
Smith
Fantili
Carlsson

How does he not go 1st? Cooley before? No. Nemec and Jiricek are on par with Reinbacher from what I gather. That leaves Slaf. My guess is that teams prefer a more known quantity in Smith coming in from an A+ program in USNDP. It’s measurable, Slaf was hard to project coming in from reduced playing time in Finland and weird ass teams in OG and WC.
I am not sure if Smith goes ahead of Cooley.

Stats are one thing but Cooley is also an offensive dynamo but he is just so much more involved and dynamic.

I think Slaf goes before Smith and i think Slafkovsky is in the discussion with the Carlsson and Fantilli.

I don't think there is a lot of talent discrepancy between Slaf and Smith but i think Slafkovsky unique profile gave him an edge. I am not sure 32 teams out of 32 would pick Slaf above Smith and the opposite is also true.

My humble opinion. I also think we greatly undervalue Slafkovsky here. Fantilli and Carlsson were very good at the world cup but it was still a big notch below what Slaf displayed last year.

Carlsson and Fantilli likely one of which will go before Smith and they combined for 8 pts in 18 games at the WC, Slaf had 9pts in 8games. Smith is a good player not even going to ague against that he might be better but if your just comparing pts total, why aren’t you considering that Slaf rack up more pts than Fantilli and Carlsson at the WC and they might be ahead of Smith. Also if their all in the same draft class Slaf is the youngest of the 4 the difference with Smith is probably negligible but still. Slaf is a pretty unique specimen pretty sure he is still in the conversation.

Slaf had 9 points on 20 slovakia team total goal.

What he did at the world cup was a 1% thing from any 17YO in history.

People put emphasis on his liiga production and to beware of his short international tournament.

The thing is, the opposite also stand. Remove Slaf first half of the season in Liiga, which amount to pretty much the same numbers of games to his international tournament and you have a totally different picture of his draft year.

If you remove all the shifts where he didn't score, he scores every shift, probably the only player in history to do that.

So after having studiously read large portions of this thread, I've discovered an important conclusion: nobody knows who the Habs will select at 5...
That’s a strange comment. Did you first expect when you opened the thread that fans on hfboards would know who the Habs will pick at 5? Chances are Hughes himself doesn’t even know yet.

Cristall is not fast enough to be as good of a playmaker as Smith. Smith creates by going around, not a weapon in Cristall's arsenal or he would be top 10 easily.

I think Smith is the more transferable prospect, but just in terms of the numbers Cristall completes more passes than Smith attempts. Same for the comparison with Benson. His rate is something else.

you only looked at a 2 week tournament what about hes season with TPS he had 10 points everyone knows Slafkovsky went 1st because of hes size matter fact when Knuckles asked Gorton who he was picking 1st Jeff told him we need to get bigger

Juraj is a beast which can help in the NHL ( hopefully for us ) but talent wise no hes not better then Smith Slafkovsky went #1 on a weak draft but this one is very strong one of the best

I don't disagree, but I think Smith creates in more ways than passing.

True. I think Smith is more projectable for this reason, the moves are more ''full body'' even if Cristall dummies defenders regularly. The passes he comes up with are more out of the box, too. But there are fewer of them.
