They shouldn't have any issue with it, they can do it too if they want to. This isn't the first time it's happened.

No one is forcing the other team to give up those prospects in exchange for eating money. They could have simply just taken on the full salary and given up lesser prospects.

This is neglecting the fact that Cohen is twice as rich as any other owner, which makes buying prospects a bit easier to swallow. Of course other rich teams like the Yankees have engaged in similar tactics forever, so maybe the MLB isn't concerned. But they do seem a bit more interested in parity in recent years.

Every other owner is rich enough to do what Cohen does. They don’t because there’s plenty of ridiculously cheap owners.

Lots of talk about next year being a "transition" year for the Mets, but to me that sounds more like "We're not going to try to buy everyone this winter" than "We're going to be bad." Unless they continue moving guys out, like Alonso or whatever, they will still have the makings of a decent lineup:

C: Alvarez
1B: Alonso
2B: McNeil
SS: Lindor
3B: Baty
LF: TBD, maybe Mauricio?
CF: Nimmo
RF: Marte

If they get a bounce-back from McNeil and/or Marte, and possible progression from Alvarez and Baty (Alvarez is already really good), the lineup could still be very good. Of course, with this group, they never seem to be able to hit all at once, but the framework for a good offense is there.

In the pen they'll still have Diaz, Ottavino, Smith, and Raley, which is only half of what you need, but it's not inconceivable they can find some scrap heap guys to chip in.

The real issue will be the rotation. Senga, Quintana, and what? It's hard for me to believe they won't sign an arm. I can't see Cohen sitting still all winter.

Anyway, this of course changes if they start selling more guys. It's still hard for me to see them being a dumpster fire next year, though. To me, "transition year" seems more like they're going to try to build up internally a little this year before going all in the following year.

Rebuilding the Mets rotation will be a major undertaking given the lack of arms in AAA. It's also interesting (not sure that's the right word) that three of their top four young position players (Baty, Mauricio and Vientos) can’t actually field a position.

Hopefully they don't reup Vogelback. He is one dimensional and effectively eats 2 roster spots. I think Eppler likes him and Buck seemed to imply Eppler is why he is in the lineup. Him and Carrasco are the only expiring contracts that weren't traded probably because no one wanted them.

Mets active payroll going into next year is $155 million ignoring the $50 million they're eating so there is room to add pitchers if any are available Otani is a definite fit but who knows where he winds up.

the mets are not in bad shape with their bats. acquire some pitchers, trade away marte and come up with 2 capable outfielders and they can rebound to 100 wins again.

the yankees flat out suck. 2nd highest payroll in the mlb. i'd rather see if for once and for all if florial is the real deal. he's just wasting away in the minors. no more billy mckinley'/peraza.
