Fielding percentage is maybe the worst possible metric for defensive ability, because you can't make an error on a ball you don't reach. Put a literal statue at shortstop and it will only be charged errors for balls that directly hit it.

I mean, you're not wrong that Jeter was fine at short (most of the time anyway), but he also didn't do what was best for the team by insisting on staying there when a better shortstop was acquired. The only argument for not moving him to third and keeping A-Rod at short was that Jeter would be an even worse 3B than he was a SS.
Yeah it's also really subjective. The decision to score it an error is up to the official scorer. Obviously they have criteria to inform how they make those determinations, but it's still subjective.

Jeter was famous for those jump-throws in the hole which obviously were pretty and required a decent arm and good coordination. A shortstop with good range wouldn't need to make that kind of play. It's Torii Hunter Syndrome, where you make flashy plays because you're a "good" fielder but have shitty range or take terrible routes.

(I'm not shitting on Jeter by the way.)

I wonder if pitcher fatigue is going to be a thing with the new pitch clock. 80 pitches with the clock is different than 80 pitches without.
I think this will be real. The broadcast crew yesterday pointed out Carrasco's velocity was dipping during the 3rd inning (iirc). The arm is not given enough time to recupe after a pitch.

GKR were talking about that yesterday. They said they heard guys were tired. They're rushing. That part of it I do expect guys will adjust to. I might not, but they will.

On a blog the other day they mentioned that significantly speeding up the game also meant cutting out a lot of GKR, which I hadn't considered. Given how much enjoyment those three guys give me, that's sad to think about.
Keith saying bananas are fattening due to sugars is already an instant classic of 2023.

Oh man, I'm actually doing chemistry today and Keith is 100% banned from the class with a take like that.

A Dh in right, a short stop in center, and a guy whose defensive ability plummeted in left last year for the Yankees tonight.

Dynamite start for the New York Yankees.

Very hard to complain - Gleyber smashing .

The Mets ?
Could it start any better for a douche bag like Steve Cohen? Excellent.

The shine is clearly off buck Showalter. -, never knew how to use a Pen never knew when to pinch hit - showing that early this year.
Nice guy though

Max Scherzer about to become heavily booed as well.

Verlander still hurt -Will he make 20 starts ?

They'll never recover from this 3-4 start. Move the franchise to Alaska and start over imo.

You're not wrong.

I think Jeter, to his credit, was a clutch fielder. He made big plays when we needed them, wasn't prone to mistakes in big spots, and had a knack for being in the right place. The Oakland flip play comes to mind.

That being said, you need your shortstop to be a bit more than reliable and heady, because it's the hardest position. He was definitely guilty of making "fantastic" plays on balls better shortstops would just be in front of.

I will say, I'm not much of a believer in "clutch." With that said, despite loathing the guy when he played (just as a jealous Mets fan), he made me feel like clutch was a real thing. He was just such a smart, cerebral, aware, and composed player. The moment was never too big for him, and I admired that about Jeter.

Ok, a couple of things. Can the NY Presbyterian ad-patch be any bigger? It looks like a pain relief patch. And they're either on the left or right depending on being a RH or LH hitter so that it always shows up?

Eduardo escobar needs to be sent to the moon once Baty gets healthy. Enough of this crap.

Vientos should be up here sooner than later too.

Time to let the kids guide us instead of some crappy vets.

Edit: and now escobar single handedly ruined a bases loaded rally. f*** him i want him gone. There is zero reason why he should have been starting over Baty to begin with this year.

Nice job by Yanks, keep winning series. Pretty cool Nestor is just good, and is not a one year wonder guy. He’s really fun to watch.
