i think capobianco is better than any of the non-hughes, cole and soucy LDs vancouver have available but i doubt they'll claim him

I don't get the interest in Coghlan, although I know little about him. Isn't he more offensively focused and kind of meh in his own zone?

Nah. Coghlan is very much a pretty conservative "defence first" guy who just happens to be a pretty good skater.

He's not like a complete stud, lockdown shutdown defenceman per se...but nobody on waivers is.

I'd probably give Gustav Lindstrom a try. Though it's concerning that he's now backed his way out of a second team's defence in as many years. There was a point not too long ago where it looked like he had Top-4 defensive D upside. Defensive-oriented RHD with size, gets around the ice well. I'm still a bit of a believer...but then, i also would've kept Wolanin on the roster. So... :dunno: Not even sure they're approaching this with the flexibility to make a claim. They've kinda tailored what they have with "paper" transactions to a specific cap figure or some presumably deliberate reason.

I'd rather give Coghlan a try than Juulsen, at this point. If Coghlan can't hack-it then you do qualify him and you've lost nothing. Same as a Ludvig. There's noone else on the right side, in the organization, worth trying. They're staring down the realistic option of playing Myers in a top-4 role again...

Most Carolina fans say he can move the puck but can’t defend.

Lindstrom, Coghlan, Ludvig...they've gotta do something. Unless they've got a trade brewing to address it more convincingly...you have to at least make an attempt at resolving this issue. You can't be serious about the season and getting off to a desperately needed good start, only to trot out Juulsen or a rookie UDFA with next to no Pro experience as the only thing standing between Myers playing big minutes, and a Hughes-Hronek pairing that makes no sense and doesn't get the most out of either of them.

Worst thing that happens with a waiver claim is...you end up having to waive the guy yourself. Hope he's pulled back by the original team.

I've read that as well. Like I said, I'm just willing to try anyone else for a bit. The odds of getting value off a waiver claim is quite low anyway.
Ya, exactly. Juulsen really doesn’t seem like an NHL player and we shouldn’t be worried about waiving him to try someone else.

Dream scenario is we pick up Ludvig and we trade Hoglander for Pachal.

Hughes-Pachal
Cole-Hronek
Ludvig-Myers

To start the season.

did not realize bogosian was on waivers. he fits my mold for a hughes partner. i can see them trying that.

Obviously should be on the lookout for defensive depth (both sides really), but not sure how much they have to stand pat to assure whatever type of cap gymnastics they're attempting to maximize LTIR etc.
