These guys are likely to play some NHL games anyways. We're paying Wolanin $500K minimum the next two seasons and Docker is 23 years old RHD and a former 1st round pick. I'm confident that Aquilini doesn't think it's as big of a deal as you make it out to be.
It's interesting whenever I read comments about money not mattering to rich people. After the OEL buyout investment he just made do ypu think it is readonable to assume he would be fine pissing away another 2 million on a player that is tweening?

Robin Salo I would personally claim but I get if they don't because it looks like they already have 4 LD on the team (assuming that Wolanin has made the team which I think is likely) and they would preferably look at RD as their main target on the waiver wire.

Yeah, same. He's a really similar profile to Wolanin as a lanky skilled two-way guy with some PP2 utility and some questions about physicality. I'm happy just sticking with Wolanin who looks like a solid option.

Wolanin was signed after being the best defender in the AHL. JBD scored 6 points last year.

If you think NHL teams don't care about wasting money on AHL players, I don't know what to say.

And if management has 4-5 guys they think might be interesting if they hit waivers and some are on two-way deals that pay $70k in the AHL and another is on a two-year one-way ... they aren't taking the 2nd guy.

Where are you getting the $2M? From MS? You know he's wrong right?

Allison is basically the exact same player as Dakota Joshua - a big, fairly skilled bottom-6 power winger with slowish feet and who is physical and occasionally fights but leaves you wanting a bit more on that front. I'll be surprised if he isn't claimed by someone.

Robin Salo would be interesting if he was an RD but I don't think he's an upgrade on Wolanin as a depth LD.

I've been confused since he was in Philly why Aube-Kubel isn't more valued as one of the best forechecking 4th liners in the NHL.

Sad to see Lindblom on waivers - his career has just never gotten back to where it was post bone cancer.

Yeah. Allison definitely seems like the profile of a guy who gets claimed. There just aren't typically very many bigger guys with some physicality, who can actually play a bit...who end up on waivers. The stop/start development might scare teams off a bit, but as a basically minimum $$$ claim, he's not a hard guy to fit in to cap strapped rosters and give him a shot.

Aube-Kubel also confuses me a bit. Every time i watch him, it seems like he manages to stand out in a 4th line energy role. Real buzzsaw player. He's also got a little bit of sneaky skill, relative to the role. He's not "tall" but he's a heavy guy and he plays to it. He just seems to keep getting caught up in weird circumstances that shuffle him around with the numbers game or some accounting blip. At $1.2M he's probably going to get mired in that situation again. Can be buried...but that's more than most teams are looking to spend on a 4th line energy guy right now.

Think the injury prone part is the biggest issue. If he's currently healthy, I don't mind him replacing Studnicka.

The real problem with taking a flyer on a guy like Allison over Studnicka is...it's questionable how much or a marginal upgrade you're getting. But what you're clearly losing, is in sending the wrong message to guys in the room. I think everyone has kind of taken notice of the way Studnicka came in doing everything asked of him, working really hard in the offseason. Having a great camp. To just drop him because somebody else put their leftovers on waivers is...not really reinforcing the idea of "merit" and "work hard, do what you're asked and you'll be rewarded".

I think Studnicka also brings some more speed to the role. Which, with our roster's overall lack of that trait...is not a "nothing" consideration.

I wouldn't mind Allison here in a vacuum. But given our actual circumstances, it just feels like a "grass is greener" tinkering move...with very very marginal "upside" and some obvious, observable "downsides".

I agree that it sucks to think you have a good shot at claiming that last spot only to lose to a late waiver claim. But I think at the end of the day the players don't care. Gillis did it every year. I can't think of a year where he didn't make a waiver claim or acquisition just before the season starts.

It really comes down to whether the player you are picking up is an NHL player and an upgrade. While Studnicka got all the praise for coming into camp in great shape, has he really done much in the preseason games to earn a spot? Based on preseason performance, PDG has earned a spot. Combined with his performance last season he clearly deserves a spot ahead of Studnicka. Joshua doesn't deserve a spot based on his preseason play but I would give him the benefit of the doubt given his performance last season.

To me, Allison is the better player. I also don't think Allison is slow. I feel Tocchet wants Studnicka to play the way Allison plays. Allison is the better forechecker and has a better shot. I just don't see Studnicka as a full time NHL player at this point.

I think Studnicka has absolutely done everything you could ask of a guy trying to win a 4th line/spare spot in camp and through the preseason games.

The game where they stuck him in as a placeholder for a top center, he struggled in a completely different role. But back as a 4th line energy winger tonight with Bluegers and Aman...that line was exactly want you want in a unit like that. They just relentlessly forechecked, gained possession and didn't give it back. Eventually mash the puck into the net...or...have a guy pop a goal on a broken play that all three capitalized on together.

I feel like you're just very reluctant to give Studnicka credit for what he's actually done through camp this year. It's not just that he came in great shape, he's looked fundamentally like more of the player that he did in Jrs. Confident, faster, bigger, stronger.

Allison is a pretty comparable player. But he almost seems like he's more...where Studnicka was last year. He hasn't had that "wakeup call" moment yet. Partly due to injuries and things outside his control. But i'm just not sure what the real appreciable "upside" advantage is there. Compared to that obvious downside of showing zero loyalty to guys in the organization who do everything they're asked to.

didn't dhaliwal report the canucks would be making their final cuts today?

That he did! I raised an eyebrow since there’s no reason for them to do it this early. Tomorrow is the last day to put a player on waivers before the deadline of Monday.

Had a bit of a chuckle at Stillman getting waived after Sabres fans last spring were raving about him.

Soucy injury probably necessitated some revision of plans.

Golden Knights are a team to watch. With them claiming Denisenko, they will have to cut someone. Amadio, Cotter, or Dorofeyev from the forward groups. Pachal or Hutton from the defence. That's if Korczak didn't win a job. If he's in the mix then they'll have to make two cuts.

Martinez is currently injured. He may be healthy for game one though.

So, we try to claim Bjork AND Fleury (with the injury to Soucy)? I think the team needs these cheap adds and let McWard cook a bit in Abby.
