Kind of annoyed they didn't bother to take a flyer on JBD tbh. We're in exactly the right sort of situation to at least give it a look. We still don't really have our defence corps sorted out and there's at least a solid likelihood that he's better, or at least more "ready" for NHL action than McWard right now.

Either they've got something bigger cooking in a trade, or it seems like they're kind of asleep at the wheel. I just don't know how you could see the usage McWard has been pressed into, how guys like Juulsen have continued to look...and still somehow sit on your hands, content with that defensive depth, on the RH side especially.
I have to defer to the NHL scouts I guess. A lot of NHL pundit sites were surprised that Bernard-Docker wasn't picked up by somebody. A former first round pick earning basically the league minimum.

But clearly other NHL talent evaluators weren't that impressed. Having now cleared waivers, maybe he's 'trade bait'.

Wouldn't he have to clear waivers again in a trade

Good question....he's already been assigned to the Sens AHL affiliate after clearing.....but if he was traded to another NHL team, would he have to be exposed to waivers again before he was recalled?

Panthers placing Denisenko and Kiersted of waivers today. Increasingly looks like Ludvig made the roster.
The other options after their big 4 cap hits can be fully buried in the A. So, not too surprised. Denisenko was a former first rounder. Lundell is really the only first rounder FLA has in a long time with all of the ones they have traded away. Knight being the other. Is he back or is he still in the program?

He's back but they sent him down today to shake off the rust.

Wade and Salo are no brainers, NAK is also an nhler 4th line upgrade but they're a dime a dozen

Allison is basically the exact same player as Dakota Joshua - a big, fairly skilled bottom-6 power winger with slowish feet and who is physical and occasionally fights but leaves you wanting a bit more on that front. I'll be surprised if he isn't claimed by someone.

Robin Salo would be interesting if he was an RD but I don't think he's an upgrade on Wolanin as a depth LD.

I've been confused since he was in Philly why Aube-Kubel isn't more valued as one of the best forechecking 4th liners in the NHL.

Sad to see Lindblom on waivers - his career has just never gotten back to where it was post bone cancer.

definitely would prefer salo as the 6th/7th dmen here over one of juulsen or wolanin

Teams have budgets. They probably have an Abbotsford salary budget of about $5 million and if they're wrong on JBD and he ends up down there he's blown that out of the water by like 15% and cost Aquilini an extra new Ferrari.

There are probably 10-15 similar bubble defenders who will be on waivers in the next week who have a $70k AHL salary or who are on a 1-year deal. JBD isn't a player who somehow stands out from the pack and you aren't going to take the risk on that extra salary if you don't need to.

Like, Brayden Pachal is a similar/better player to JBD who is probably 50/50 to be on waivers in the next week and has 50% of the guaranteed financial commitment. Why would you rush to claim the far more expensive guy?

You were talking about Ottawa taking a huge risk. What's that got to do with Abbotsford?

What?

I was saying that it's a big risk (relatively speaking) to put a waiver claim in on a guy with 2 years of a 1-way deal remaining, as opposed to a guy on a 2-way or a 1-year deal.

There are probably 15 or 20 similar 'bubble' defenders who will be on waivers, and JDB has a higher guaranteed amount owning than most of the rest of them, so if you get the evaluation wrong you're risking holding the bag on substantially more $$$.

Feel like Tocchet would love this guy.

A bit injury prone, but he's a powerforward.

Think the injury prone part is the biggest issue. If he's currently healthy, I don't mind him replacing Studnicka.

These guys are likely to play some NHL games anyways. We're paying Wolanin $500K minimum the next two seasons and Docker is 23 years old RHD and a former 1st round pick. I'm confident that Aquilini doesn't think it's as big of a deal as you make it out to be.
