Huh?

Teams have budgets and they don't want to get stuck paying a guy $1 million to play in the AHL unnecessarily. That is not an attractive contract for a fringe waiver-claim level player who scored 6 points in the AHL last year.

How was he defensively? If he could at least hold his own and let McWard cook a little I could be convinced.

Good point.....with players having now cleared waivers, a team could acquire them and leave them playing in the minors
Plus, can swap guys to give them a fresh start if teams are wanting to maintain their current number of contracts at say 47 or something.

Kind of annoyed they didn't bother to take a flyer on JBD tbh. We're in exactly the right sort of situation to at least give it a look. We still don't really have our defence corps sorted out and there's at least a solid likelihood that he's better, or at least more "ready" for NHL action than McWard right now.

Either they've got something bigger cooking in a trade, or it seems like they're kind of asleep at the wheel. I just don't know how you could see the usage McWard has been pressed into, how guys like Juulsen have continued to look...and still somehow sit on your hands, content with that defensive depth, on the RH side especially.

Probably comes down to that there will be a lot more guys coming, and with less financial commitment.

Could be. Watching Cale Fleury tonight, he looked pretty good. If something like that ends up being an option, fair enough.

But aside from the $50k to put in the claim, i'm not sure how much "risk" there really would've been in just claiming JBD and giving it a try while you wait to see what else shakes out on the waiver wire (or trade options). If something better comes along, you can always still just waive him and i'd imagine the Sens still take him back and assign him to their minor league affiliate as depth.

It's a fully buriable contract for JBD. So if that kind of penny pinching is the issue here, i'm not really sure how to contextualize that in the sense of what they're paying some other guys on the roster, and some guys not on the roster.

JBD is on a one-way so the financial commitment is about 1.6m over two years.

Is that really a dealbreaker though? Like...they're gonna spend to the cap and carry plenty of one-ways or expensive 2-ways to help the baby Canucks anyway. It's like...you're paying OEL millions upon millions of dollars to not play for this team. Is $800k a year really where you're gonna draw the line on potentially improving the team?

Why do you keep saying $1 million? JBD is making $785K this year and $825K the next. What's the "big risk" that Ottawa took that you're so critical of? Again, maybe Ottawa wanted to make his contract "unattractive" so he wouldn't be picked up.

The Canucks signed Brisebois to a 2 year contract where his contract is one way in 24-25. It's an "unattractive" contract for another team right now, but it's hardly a "big risk" on the Canucks' part.

Again, I don't know why you're making a big deal about this as if Ottawa took this huge gamble and lost.

Also don't understand the contract argument at all.

Free assets but nah we got pod and woo and rathbone, just hold onto them until they're completely worthless.

If fleury or Iorio or better is an option then great, but why not both, not like the prospect pool is knocking down any doors whatsoever.

Oh and ethan bear apparently, incredible depth.

Management? No.

Ownership? Probably. We know that’s a conversation that past management teams have had before and ownership was against one-ways in the AHL then.

I still just don't see it as that much of a liability, even in that cheapskate context.

Either JBD helps in the NHL...or you waive him and i still think the Sens would take him back. They signed that contract and could still use the extra depth, considering they lost Lassi.

Teams have budgets. They probably have an Abbotsford salary budget of about $5 million and if they're wrong on JBD and he ends up down there he's blown that out of the water by like 15% and cost Aquilini an extra new Ferrari.

There are probably 10-15 similar bubble defenders who will be on waivers in the next week who have a $70k AHL salary or who are on a 1-year deal. JBD isn't a player who somehow stands out from the pack and you aren't going to take the risk on that extra salary if you don't need to.

Like, Brayden Pachal is a similar/better player to JBD who is probably 50/50 to be on waivers in the next week and has 50% of the guaranteed financial commitment. Why would you rush to claim the far more expensive guy?

I think they have something cooking

It will be very interesting to see what the Golden Knights do. They have 10 defencemen left in training camp, although Whitecloud is injured and may not be ready for the stop of the season. Assumning Whitecloud is on the roster but scratched, they can just waive Miromanov and send Korczak down. That's if they go with 8 defencemen.

Hutton. Pachal, Miromanov, and Korczak competing for 2 spots.

Surprised Penguins are waiving Nylander. Thought he'd stick on the 4th line.
Pens top forwards don't really kill penalties, outside of R.Smith so I'd assume the coaches prefer more utility from their depth players.

Canes and Knights both so deep on the blueline, these are definitely the teams the Canucks should be keeping an eye on.

Canes really have one decision to make on the blueline and that's between Caleb Jones or Dylan Coghlan. They haven't scratched anyone from their training camp roster yet, which is odd.

knights will probably waive miromanov, put korczak in henderson and use hutton and pachal as the 7th/8th d. miromanov isn't really going to help this team so no help there

Alex Nylander...Picked 8th OA in 2016.

Interesting to note that only one player out of the top ten of the 2016 draft is still with his original team.

Lots of hype and hoopla surrounding Nylander (probably on the rep of his older brother) before the 2016 draft...Along with several other players in the top 10 of that year, he's a huge disappointment.
