He's also 24, not 21. Figure by now he'd actually be closer to his target weight. If he's had trouble up to now adding, not likely to be easy for him to actually do it.

See how he is next year really. This is an AHL year for him. But, if he wants a legit shot at the NHL, he's got to figure it out with the trainer/nutritionist to help him get to where he needs to be physically.

It can take guys some time to fill out. TJ Brodie was trying to gain muscles every year until he was in his later 20s but Brodie does have wider shoulders.

I think the nutrition aspects of the NHL life is different than in college as well. I think more likely Hirose wasn't doing everything he can. But he's now a pro and he gets to learn how serious players train and work out.

LOL of course they did Drance. Did he follow it up with that laugh that would get him punched out in pretty much any pub inthe lower mainland? Between him and String Tie the media has to to shit in this town.

Where’s Neil Macrae and Gary Mason when you need them?
Gary Mason who falls all over himself to carry water for an alleged cold abuser.

Who the heck is string tie?

He‘s either allergic to the gym and/or food, or he must just not have the frame to put on much size???

You’d think if millions of dollars were on the line, putting on 10+ pounds wouldn’t be too difficult to do for most people in his position…

Not how bodies work.

It's not "either" those two things. There's a long list of things that can cause someone to not be able to gain (healthy) weight when you're trying maintain stamina and endurance.

@ rypper and Vector OK yeah these damn phones suck. Mason was good in his day though. I wasn’t really hip to him being buddies with Fredo. That puts a damper on things for sure.

I wouldn't say "normal" weight. If Hirose was a boxer he would probably try and fight at ~156lbs. How much does Petey weigh? Don't ask him.

Well celebrities do it for movies and at Hirose's age he could probably could gain quite a bit of lean muscle in 3 months.

He does have narrow shoulders. I think he's a guy you want to focus on strength rather than weight.

You state this as if every actor does this for a role. For every actor you have seen gain/lose weight for a role, there's probably ten who can't, or didn't. And they don't have to maintain stamina, endurance, and mobility like hockey players do; that's the key here. Some people will burn through weight maintaining their endurance.

He was my guy as well. The last couple years has been disappointing.

Who are the actors who can't? Those who didn't probably didn't work hard enough?

Modern day hockey training involves mostly strength and mobility training and nutrition. It's about power, speed, mobility, and explosiveness. Endurance training actually isn't a big part of it. You're training your body for short shifts not marathons. Players don't typically "burn through weight" while training. The goal is to build strength and muscle mass while maintaining agility and explosiveness.

AFAIK "in shape" means conditioning. The "in shape" player can perform consistently and without a sluggish decline over the course of an entire game. If a player added 10lbs of muscle, but they run out of gas after the 2nd period they are not "in shape". Anyone who has done competitive sports knows that a tired body means a tired mind. Poor conditioning is a double whammy of lead legs and bad decisions.

Fitness level and conditioning are terms used frequently. And we are talking about NHL level fitness/conditioning. If a player shows up to camp looking weak I don’t think he would be considered “in shape.”

For most, the conditioning and fitness level of players at training camp is going to the best they will be all season.

I wonder if we'll start seeing skinny players get gut microbiome transplants from thicker players and thicker players getting the same from thin ones? There's a lot of evidence that gut bacteria really changes how easily one is able to pack on mass in a healthy fashion.

In all seriousness though, I find this fascinating as I work in the fitness industry. It makes sense though. The better the body is at breaking down food, more nutrients and protein are going to be available for muscle repair.

There are so many things we're just starting to understand about how the body actually does things. We know what the inputs and outputs tend to be but not the full process and how to tweak it for extra efficiency.

The tread title is an oxymoron.

No offense, but it's true.

There's a reason these players are on waivers. And it's not because they are interesting as players. Just saying.

What does it mean if a player’s name is crossed out?

Oh ok. I guess we should just close this thread down. Good players never go on waivers.

Well, I never said that good players never go on waivers nor suggested that we should close this thread down. Let's put the strawmen away, shall we?
