I thought about changing the lottery to:
1st lottery drawing a team can only move up 10 spots and is seeded to that draft position.
2nd lottery drawing a team can only move up 5 spots and is seeded to that position unless it's occupied by the 1st lottery winner
3rd lottery drawing a team moves up 3 spots unless occupied by 1 of the other lottery winners.
The rest fill in by the reverse order...

they would never get anyone spectacular enough to overcome

There are 314 UFAs available this summer. Didn't get a high draft pick? Better get busy GMs...new NHL commissar MIGs Dog will no longer tolerate your ineptness and reward you for sucking at your job. :)

I might make the case that if the Tempe deal gets done, this is the first of the first overalls that will truly matter.

Would we have squandered McDavid any less? Mishandled Eichel any less? Would Matthews have convinced previous owners not to sell or new owners to “go for it”? Would as little more success have kept the team in Glendale and therefore perpetual futility? Or maybe we could’ve won a lottery of Lafreniere or Kakko?

My muddy, meandering point is only that the timing is very good now (assuming Tempe votes our way) and the situation in the past was so bad that a lottery win may have just been mostly wasted.

It's interesting. everyone keeps trying this narrative that "Bedard should refuse to sign with AZ" if somehow the Coyotes magically win the lottery. It's an absurd narrative given that Edmonton exists in the league and it ignores how this team is actually playing.

Based on how this team is actually playing regardless of skill level, we have zero chance of finishing with the worst record in the NHL. It's over. At this point I'm not sure we finish bottom 5 and truthfully I'm not 100% sure BA cares. I don't know why. Maybe he has a plan. Maybe he just feels Mitchkov this the backup plan and he's going to fall because of the Russian factor and we will snag him just like we snagged Fedotov and Dudas who are enjoying breakout campaigns right now. Maybe BA looks at things and says you know what if we are picking in that 6-9 range then we either take a small slight winger or he's prepared to just prioritize size early and get himself a Barlow or Wood type power forward who nobody is yet really talking about as a top 10 player. It's fascinating. I'm going to have to expand my viewings in the CHL to fine tune my list accordingly.

It would definitely change the landscape for sure. Heck, it might be fun, the only problem that i have is a team like Colorado who is devastated by injuries just missing out on the playoffs and then landing the 1st overall pick. That somehow just doesn't seem fair.

I'd bet $ to donuts that BA is going to go w/a Wood or Barlow, before entertaining a small winger like Benson etc...We've got small players already in Keller/Schmaltz/Maccelli/Cooley, no need to add to that mix, time to bring in some bigger players with skill to play with them.

There isn't any system that everyone would agree is fair, but two things I know:
1. The Coyotes might never draft 1OA
2. The current system rewards intentional failure.

Both of those realities are unfair.

Hear, hear. All losing on purpose ever guarantees you is that you have to watch your team lose.

Plus, in another life I was insanely lucky, so I have 0 expectations. The Orlando Magic in 1992 and 1993 won consecutive lotteries at 15% and 1.5% and got Shaq and Penny (see? no guarantees in life. We got to 1 finals and that's it. Next year got swept by the Bulls, for some bizarre reason they didn't pay Shaq, and Shaq was gone. There's a great 30 for 30 on that saga.). That was a 1 in 434 chance...

What irks me about the lottery is they keep changing it and then it ends up rewarding the team that has already won the lottery.

Edmonton and McDavid is the prime example.
Montreal this year after "winning" last year (due in part to an awesome trade coupled with Florida falling off a cliff)

The problem I have is somehow the same teams get to replenish Superstars with superstars ,

Mario /Jagr to Crosby - Malkin
Sakic /Forsberg to McKinnon Makar
Gretzky /Kurrie to McDavid - Draisaitl
St Louis / Lecavalier - Stamkos/ Kutcherov
Kane /Toews to Bedard seems probable

It hasnt been since Roenick since we seen a coyote on page 1 of the scoring stats ( actually maybe Whitney in 2012)

edit: Today Keller is the last name on the bottom of page 1 ..

I agree that the pick won't be Benson.
What about Michkov though? I think Bill would be interested in that small winger.

Yeah, I have no idea how they feel about Michkov. I know that I don't want to wait 4yrs, and don't know if BA and group wants to wait 4yrs.

that's where I was going with my commentary but for every Tage Thompson that BA was a part of selecting there was a Schmaltz, Fabbri, or Tarasenko. Sometimes skill trumps size. Especially if it is perceived to be elite skill. The question is whether or not Smith, Yager, and/or Bensen are those type of players. They could be. I like them all; especially Bensen who is the best player on a stacked Winnipeg team.

and I'm tempted to rank Wood higher, I just haven't watched enough of him to validate moving him up, but I do like his game, a lot.
Skating worries me. A bit Kaliyev-like. Worked for Kaliyev but for many others before him, it was a problem. Love the size, offensive ability, and attitude, though.

EDIT: not saying he plays the same game as Kaliyev.

My current list:
1 - Bedard
2 - Fantilli (still love his game)
3 - Carlsson
4 - Michkov
5 - Smith
6 - Barlow
7 - Yager
8 - Cristall
9 - Dvorsky
10 - Benson

20 - Stramel
We’ve got the same top five but I’m still completely lost on how to rank the rest. I’ve got some WJC games to catch up on and a CHL package to dig into. The NTDP guys I saw a bunch last year but won’t catch much of this year until the u18.

I would have settled for Lil Penny in 2015 (Marner)!
