With the Francouz situation, this might be an ideal time to just wait for guys to pop onto the waiver wire. That way when/if Francouz is healthy again, we can just put the goalie back on waivers and they either go back to their original team, or we have another guy who can start in the AHL for us.

Some goalies who look like they could/should end up on waivers:
- Hunter Shepard (WAS) | Age 27 | 6'1", 209 Ibs | Contract: 775k x 2 (2-way) | 22-23 (AHL): 33GP 0.916 Sv% (Playoffs: 20GP 0.914 Sv%) | 21-22 (AHL): 9GP 0.922 Sv%; (ECHL): 23GP 0.917 Sv%
- Alex Lyon (DET) | Age 30 | 6'1" 201 Ibs | Contract: 900k x 2 (1-way) | 22-23 (FLA): 15GP 0.914 Sv% (Playoffs: 4GP 0.888 Sv%); (AHL): 23GP 0.910 Sv% | 21-22 (AHL): 30GP 0.912 Sv% (Playoffs: 12GP 0.923 Sv%)
- Joseph Woll (TOR) | Age 25 | 6'2" 198 Ibs | Contract: 766k x 2 (1-way) | 22-23 (TOR): 7GP 0.932 Sv% (Playoffs: 4GP 0.915 Sv%); (AHL): 21GP 0.927 Sv% | 21-22 (TOR): 4GP 0.911 Sv%; (AHL): 15GP 0.907 Sv%
- Cayden Primeau (MTL) | Age 24 | 6'3" 200 Ibs | Contract: 890k x 2 (1-way) | 22-23 (MTL): 3GP 0.852 Sv%; (AHL): 41GP 0.909 Sv% (Playoffs: 2GP 0.912 Sv%) | 21-22 (NHL): 12GP 0.868 Sv%; (AHL): 33GP 0.909 Sv% (Playoffs: 14GP 0.932 Sv%)

Every year goalies pass through waivers who end up as solid backups or even starters just one or two years later. I think it would be worth giving any of these four guys a shot as the backup, at least until Frankie is healthy.

I think a guy like Lyon/Sandstrom is likely. No way Woll ends up on waivers, it will be Jones. Doubtful about Primeau too.

Primeau is definitely going on waivers unless there are injuries. They aren't going to waive Allen or Monty.
As for Woll, he was the reason I wrote "Could". I wouldn't claim Jones for obvious reasons.
I considered Sandstrom for this list, but I assume Philly will waive Petersen instead. Plus Sandstom's numbers have not been as good as the rest of the guys I listed.

I also find Shepard interesting. He played 20 games for the Hershey Bears in the playoffs and put up decent numbers, following up a pretty good regular season (his first as a full time AHLer). He would also be thematically fitting as a former Washington goalie.

Let's say Frankie is out for 2 months. I see CMac not doing anything TBH. We are so tight up against the cap, I can see him rather spending it on skating depth/saving it to deadline and see if Annunen can hold the fort for however long it takes for Frankie to come back.

I don't really care for these waiver options or trading for a 3rd. If CMac thinks we need a goalie, might as well get Halak who is better than most of the 3rd stringers in this league and anyone you could pick up from waivers.

Halak has to be willing to sign. Why would he sign with us when he knows as soon as Frankie is healthy he'll be put on waivers. He'll want to sign somewhere he's guaranteed a roster spot for the year.

The advantage of getting a guy on waivers is there's no issue with just waiving them again when Frankie is healthy or if they suck. If we just hope Annunen can hold the fort, and he plays poorly, where do we go from there? Arvid Holm? I'd rather keep Annunen in the AHL as the 3rd stinger and bring in a temporary replacement for Frankie.

Forgot about Montembault. MTL could have 2 G's on waivers. A lot of people brought up DeSmith as an option too

DeSmith makes 1.8m. I don't think he's an option for us unless Frankie is out for the whole year. I'm also assuming Montreal is planning to trade him, or use him themselves due to Allen being injured (which he usually is at this point).

And if Georgiev gets injured, are we happy with an Annunen-Holm tandem?
I'd feel a lot more comfortable with a third guy besides those two as an option.

Montreal is giving the starter job to Montembault. Allen likely #2 unless they can trade him (unlikely).

That means that they'll have to waive/trade both Primeau and DeSmith.

IMO DeSmith is a real fine backup, I'd rather have him all year than Francouz. Primeau has a higher upside but a lower floor.

IF Frankie is out 2 months, and the Avs take for instance Primeau off waivers, it actually saves the Avs cap space for the time being. The difference between having Annunen or Primeau as the backup is like 100k difference.

Doing nothing doesn’t really accomplish anything other than save that 100K as mentioned before.

Either way, when Francouz does come back, Annunen goes back to the AHL/Primeau is waived. So there’s not effect on the cap.

The problem with DeSmith is his cap hit. It’s not fully buriable. So if/when Francouz comes back, we have an additional 650K cap hit from DeSmith.

really all depends the length/nature of Frankie's injury.

If the Avs grab a guy like Lyon or Primeau, we know it probably isn't expected to be a long-term thing.

If they grab a guy like DeSmith, it's probably a LTIR scenario that can't be relied upon for awhile

Well, such a spot has not turned up yet. He's looking for 5 more wins to reach 300. I think we could facilitate that.

Do you really think he'd be fine to on waivers after 5 wins? Because that's what we could offer at best. And we can't even say he'd definitely enough games to win 5 before Frankie is back.

My assumption is he is waiting for a team to decide their current backup isn't good enough, decide they need a veteran in that position, or suffer a long-term injury to one of their goalies. I'll be shocked if he signs somewhere where he's going to end up getting waived. I'd expect him to retire or sign in Europe before signing with us.

Well it would depend on how Frankie's injury goes, and let's face it, if Halak would actually perform well then I don't think it would be too hard to dump Frankie in that situation.
