I don't believe that at all. Avalanche has no intention to pay higher average price for him. They probably want to keep him, so Toews will call their bluff like few posted above and will sign for 8 years for a lower price.

Committing 7 million to a 35+ contract for a defenseman. That can only go well...

It makes sense the Avs don't want to go past 5 years. 35+ contracts are a nightmare waiting to happen.
This team is done in five years most likely. Average team.

All part of the plan. Make it seem like they’re only going short term the whole time. Then finally when at the end they swing back in with an 8 year deal with a lower aav and sweep Toews off his feet.
Yeah the term (7-8 years) is CMac's biggest bargaining chip. It makes sense to play that chip as late in negotiations as possible.

One of those statements is largely based in reality while the other is a fantasy.
Probably. It's also a reality, that the vast majority of "top contenders" don't win or even reach the finals. Some surprise teams however, will. Thus, I don't really care if some people don't consider us a top contender in two or three years. If we still have Makar, MacKinnon, Rantanen and at least some kind of a team around them, there's a chance. A smaller one, but a chance nonetheless.

I know it's bizarre to some people here, but it's much nicer to be a sports fan when you look at things glass half full and not half empty.

The thing is the Avs WILL continue to be good as long as they keep 29/96/8. They'll make the postseason and probably win a round or two every year.

But without proper depth (which they can't afford) and without a second line center (they have no cap room for) they'll never come close to a cup again IMO.

Eh, I'd take Hartman as a deadline addition.

I get not liking Hartman for his antics and stuff like that against the Avs, but he produces at a 2nd line rate, has done well in the playoffs the last two seasons, and has the versatility to play C or W. He also only costs 1.7 AAV, which by deadline time is not much at all.

It's like Derian Hatcher back in the day. Guy was a dirty POS, would've taken him on the team in a second.

It's likely a moot point anyway. I can't see Guerin handing over a worthwhile player to the Avs at the deadline. A total scrub like Sturm? Sure. But not Hartman.

So when do we get the announcement that we picked up Spencer Martin? Although doesn't seem likely he makes it past Tampa
