Give me a player. What other player in the NHL do you think most closely compares to Morgan Frost?
I'm not generally into finding hockey player doppelgangers, so the point is this: there is only one centre in the Flyers organization that can routinely outproduce Frost over a full season and that's Couts. Unfortunately, we don't even know what we have in Couts going forward, though he has looked pretty much his regular self so far.
If you're looking to see what you have through a rebuild, routinely benching a player over others that are struggling at least as much as the single player being scratched is asinine.
Now, we also have Cates getting what honestly should be the linemates and usage that Frost should and with what Frost ran with last year. Cates isn't needed for the tough opponent match ups, so he has been given a scoring line opportunity... and is proving unable to handle it. This is the problem. For Torts, Cates can do no wrong and Frost can do no right. I think there's a lineup combination that allows for both players to have solid middle six performances over the long term, but we're never going to see it.
I'd rather the Flyers just cut ties with Frost. It's infuriating to see players sitting on the sidelines that are better players than several in the lineup who aren't given the same treatment for inefficiency... and part of the problem is that, for players who are clearly struggling, there is no perceived inefficiency by the people that matter.
