Let's assume they wanted forward depth in the case Couturier and/or Atkinson had setbacks. They are looking fine so far, so that should open up the ability to trade one or more forwards by mid-season, right?
Going into the season, Couts, Atkinson, Brink, Foerster were all unknowns.
Desnoyers (21), Lycksell (24), Allison (26), Laczynski (26) were unproven.
Tippett (24), Frost (24) and Cates (24) had less than a full season as top 9 starters.
So it's understandable Briere may have been reluctant to pull the trigger until he had more information. They may not have expected to win this season, but I doubt they wanted to field a putrid team either.
