This team's management 100% thinks the Flyers will be competing in 1 or 2 years. They have been short changing Sanheim for years and tried desperately to dump him for pennies on the dollar a few months ago.

Mighty fine talent evaluation if I ever saw it.

The next time they make an explicitly sound pro level D evaluation will be the first in almost a decade. Remember: this is brought to you by the same management team that says you build from your backend out and a 1D is the most important piece in an organization. It's like North Korea talking about how human rights is the most important part of any country.

If someone's evaluating is this fickle -- preseasons, individual games, exaggerated offseason gains -- RUN. We have years of Sanheim having top pair caliber metrics (and 5v5 scoring), while getting usage below his earning. He has an 8 year contract, freshly signed, and they were desperate to dump it for a bad contract before game year 1. But Krug refused to waive his NTC! That's the only reason Sanheim's still here. This is a team that says it will also be competing before Sanheim is even age 30. It only took 1 Tortorella year to not identify him as part of the.....oh wait, never mind. Now, certain people are authorized to praise him.

Sanheim looked like shit last year, and with a 4 year NTC, you had to gamble he'd bounce back.
A 1st rd pick back for that contract wouldn't have been a bad deal.
He's never had 1st pair responsibilities, and I'm still not sold.
Though he definitely responded the way you'd hope a veteran player would after a off season.

Drunk me just has an amazing theory. Danny B is playing 4d chess with his early tenure as gm. Here me out here he played through an era where he witnessed game to game the diminishing returns of enforcers/veteran presence players. Hell the 2010 Flyers had pests and agitators, but besides the bottom pair defenders and the goalies there was not a true plug player. (Yea even Lappy was more than just a human puck deterrent)

The 4d chess comes from knowing how lame ass this org is and he played into its lameness in order to move up. Of course he would sign off on the delauries signing he knows it's what the advisors would want. Of course he signs lame ass veterans for torts to use he knows its what the advisors would want. I bet he's hoping these moves tank the team and it gets to the point where he's "forced" to replace torts to change the direction of the team, at which point he will be able to implement a more modern approach to player and talent acquisition. I mean we all know Fletch wouldn't have picked Michkov.

This is of course speculation and has no basis in any observable evidence given from the team, but it's better thinking this is what's going on then facing the terrible reality that Briere is just as lame as the rest of the org.

Can I just enter every thread to say how much I despise Staal? He is even more worthless than I remember from years prior. Does everything badly that you expect a Dman to do at the NHL level. Any chance he retires by the end of the month? Why do the flyers insist on bringing in guys like this to eat meaningful minutes EVERY f***ING SEASON?

Or....here me out here

Danny sucks too. This guy was deemed hireable by the foundational titans. He's nothing more than one of them

We owe this guy nothing. He’s been a Flyer for less than a month. If he can’t play better than this, waive his ass. If a rookie played this poorly he’d be sent down.
This is where we’ll find out if Tortorella is full of **** . The same standard has to apply to all players. If weak play gets a younger player demoted, then weak play from a vet gets them cut. No veteran discount.

Staal played less than 10 minutes at 5x5, less than any other D-man. Too many minutes on the PK.

This game is why Briere tried to trade Sanheim.

The player in game one was a potential 1D, the player in game two got outmuscled by Giroux leading to a goal at the end of the 2nd period that put them down 4-2, then a bad penalty to start the 3rd period.

He's bigger and stronger, and generally looks more assertive, but when you make $6.25M, you have to be consistent as well. That's too much for a 2nd pair D-man who is up and down.

Defense may be a sore point for the next couple seasons, Walker looks smooth out there, but you're not extended him turning 30 next season. So it's York, Sanheim, Risto and find out what you have in Andrae and Zamula. Bonk is a couple years away, and don't think anyone on the Phantoms has more than 3rd pair upside unless Attard improves defensively (has top 4 offense, AHL defense).

Yes, Briere knew that Torey Krug would never have lost a puck battle to Hall of Fame, PPG forward Claude Giroux. :sarcasm:

Sanheim actually has been consistent on defense for the past two plus seasons while playing almost as many minutes as they guy he has replaced as the Flyers #1 dman in 23-24. I await you crediting his results to luck and shooting percentage, when the sample size is 163 games/3,107 ES minutes. :dunce:

Yandle - 4.3
Connauton - 3.74
Angelo - 3.7
Attard - 3.4
Provorov - 3.36
York - 3.2
Risto - 3.06
Zamula - 2.76
Sanheim - 2.66
Seeler - 2.62
Braun - 2.22

Krug was the price to get out of the contract and garner a 1st rd pick.

2019-20: xGF/60: 2.58, xGA/60: 2.39; xGF/60rel +0.33, xGA/60rel +0.15
2020-21: xGF/60: 2.24, xGA/60: 2.08, xGF/60rel +0.18, xGA/60rel -0.09
2021-22: xGF/60: 2.52, xGA/60: 2.73, xGF/60rel +0.34, xGA/60rel -0.02
2022-23: xGF/60: 2.33, xGA/60: 2.81, xGF/60rel -0.10, xGA/60rel +0.22

I see a player who has been slightly above average on a defense that has been steadily declining, until last season, when he he flat out sucked.

On a team where he and York are the only legitimate top 4 D-men, he should be heads and shoulders above the rest of the defense. That's not an unreasonable expectation.

No, the reason he tried to trade him is because Tortorella doesn't get along with him, and Tortorella is a f***ing manchild that they cater to for no good reason.

I'm still trying to figure out WTF they're building. Seriously, do they throw shit at a wall, sees what sticks and build from there? Like what are they trying to build? They seem to have no clue on how to build this. FFS, us fans could probably come up with a viable blueprint in how to build this club properly. I just don't get why this club is so backwards in how to get this job done. Bite the bullet and do what the Rangers did. Tear it down, build through the draft and smart trades and when things begin to blossom, start surrounding your foundation with excellent complimentary pieces.

Whatever it is, what we are looking at is close to the final product
