Unless Atkinson has a big year, and even then - he's going to be a tough contract to move and likely won't get a big return based off this offseason.

Torts dont want him..

thats been clear since Torts arrived.

besides Frost is taking a slot away from some old washed up FA! they can sign on the cheap
That's why he played 14:05 minutes at 5x5 after Dec 7?
Last 56 games: TK 14;44, Tippett 14:20, Frost 14:05, Hayes 13:52, Laughton 13:45, Cates 13:44 (Foerster 13:19), Farabee 13:11, Allison 12:49, JVR 12:11

1) He had no choice due to injury
2) Stop with the December 7th cutoff. The lines did not "Stabilize" then. They constantly shifted, just like they always had. It's a made-up line with absolutely no significance

The optimistic side of me is hoping it's taking longer because Briere wants to sign him long term.

I'm thinking it's just a tough deal to figure out, for a lot of reasons.

Centers get good money. Centers who score 45+ points can get a REALLY good money—as evidenced by the shitty 45-point center the Flyers will be paying half of $7M+ to NOT play for them.

Danny Briere likely understands that Frost has pretty good potential and it's in his best interest to lock him up long—but there's a gamble there, obviously. How long, at what hit, would Frost and his agent deem acceptable? I can't imagine you're buying a UFA year for anything less than like $4.5m. Probably more for each additional year of UFA eligibility you cross.

Frost, meanwhile, is in a weird place. He's 24 and still 3 summers from UFA. I'm going to guess he sees what a lot of us do, which is that he's been jerked around by the organization for years and probably deserved to be put in a better position to produce earlier in his career. He has the skills and capability without the resume. The current coach is a prick and Frost seemed to indicate at the end of the season that he's still not certain where he stands with that guy.

So who knows what Frost prefers—whether it's to bridge for a couple years and hope the Flyers don't ruin his career between now and the end of it so he can cash out, or to get as much guaranteed money as he can long-term right now. But I have a feeling he's not taking any sort of discount, nor should he.

It should be a bridge deal, 2/3 of a season does not a career make.

Frost's struggles were due to physical immaturity, then a major injury, then struggling to play at the NHL level a year ago.
Under Torts, he blossomed into a potential 2C, and Torts will keep pushing him, Frost has a tendency to go MIA for long stretches, he needs to be pushed to play every shift with intensity, use his speed to make things happen instead of sitting back waiting for the game to come to him.

Frost doesn't want to give a big discount on a long-term deal with the cap rising, and Briere should be wary of giving a long-term deal without a significant discount since he can overpay just as easily two years from now. Frost will be 26 in two years when Briere could offer a long-term deal with much better information, an 8 year deal would then extend to age 33, which is acceptable if Frost is a legitimate 2C. or give him a 1 year deal and work out a long-term deal next summer.

Whose playing the Goon this year for the Flyers?

Pretty Shure some people will get punch in the face somewhere.
Deslauriers and Seeler are pretty much it, and I won't be surprised if Deslauriers sits a bit if some young players step up.

Farabee - Couts - TK
Tippett - Frost - Atkinson
Laughton - Cates - Foerster
Deslauriers - Poehling - Hathaway
Lycksell, Allison, Laczynski, Desnoyers, Brink (3 start the season in LHV)

York - Walker
Sanheim - Risto
Seeler/Staal - Zamula/Attard
(Grans, Ginning, Samson at LHV)

Hart/Ersson

The key issues are health, Couts and Atkinson of course, but Walker is now 2 years form an ACL injury, was a solid 3RHD last season and if he raises his game and is a passable top 4 D-man, could be major trade bait at the TDL if the Flyers are out of the PO race.

It's actually not an awful lineup if Couts and Atkinson rebound, with Gauthier, Andrae, Bonk, Kaplan, and Michkov already in the wings.

To be a SC contender they need to be a consistent 100 point team. The offense just has to be top ten or so if they improve the defense and the goalie pipeline keeps delivering, Solid but not great offense is enough with good defense and top goalie play. Which means the focus the next couple years, given the forwards and goalies in the pipeline, should be to upgrade the defense.

Not that this isn't a waste of time anyway, but any D core that doesn't include 2 of Zamula, Andrae, and Attard is a complete waste of time.

Walker and/or Seeler should be flipped as soon as someone else has an injury in training camp or pre-season.

Staal should be 7th D.

They will never sit, even if young players step up. This is the Flyers, and you'll defend them when they continue doing the things that are the opposite of what you consider good.

The fact that this caveat needs to be made is a hell of an indictment of both their roster construction and their process.

Deslaurier brings utterly nothing to the table. He shouldn’t be part of the roster conversation.
