You wonder what Couts the Flyers will get next year.

Couts is different b/c it's the same area, so it sounds more like the initial surgery was botched and the second surgery cleaned it up.
Any back injury isn't good from a long-run perspective, but Stone playing so well after two different surgeries bodes well in the short-run.

Ginning has never and will never be a specialist in anything, let alone defensively.

I've watched a whole lot of his game in the SHL (shoutout to my good bud Blum who was his D-pair) and the guy doesn't have the skill nor the IQ to compete even as a #7. He is not good at breakouts. He does not skate with the puck. He has a terrible shot. His go-to is a pass up the boards into covered forwards by pinching defensemen when he's pressed on the forecheck. He does not process the game at high speeds. Basically, I would choose Robert Hagg over Adam Ginning 10 times out of 10, and Hagg sucks balls.

He is not good. Truth be told, I didn't watch a single Phantoms game this year only periodically checked boxscores. I do not know what parts of his games translated from SHL to the AHL and what did not, but watching him on big ice with time and space was a disaster. He is cannon fodder.

Charlie has a list of potential UFA targets.
To me, it's veterans on one year deals who can be flipped at the TDL.

Ones that make sense to me:
Foligno (35) - Torts guy who'd have value at the TDL if he shows he has something left in the tank
Bonino (35) - bottom six center who also could be flipped
Eller (34) - bottom six center who also could be flipped
Bjugstad (31) - projection is a 3 year deal, but if the market is soft, sign him to a 1 year deal and flip him

Connor Brown (29) - coming off an October ACL, should hit his stride by January (15 months) or so, just in time to up his TDL value
Namestnikov (30) - gets traded for 4th rd picks every TDL

He was better on the smaller ice, made good exit passes out of the D-zone, was a consistent stay at home defender.
Probably both a matter of maturity and that his game is better suited to the smaller ice.

By his standards he had a good solid first year. Every player has a "career year" at some point in their arc. I'd pump the brakes on this guy until he shows a modicum of consistency.

You may be right though - smaller ice suits his game, but I just don't buy it personally. With time and space he couldn't process the game quickly enough. With the smaller windows on NA ice, I'd be surprised if his turtle brain suddenly kicked it into high gear.

But then again, we see "miracles" every day. I won't count him completely out because this is the Flyers after all and they love to give non-NHL players NHL playing time, but he's very low on the list of players we should project into the starting rotation at any point in time from now and through the next 5 years.

I don't see more than a #6/#7, but depth matters b/c injuries are inevitable.
Seeler was a scrub until last year, when the light went on (or he learned how to play within his limitations).
For these kind of D-men, less is more, understanding positioning and angles, don't try to do to much, use your body, make the safe pass.
Which is why many don't become NHL starters until they're 24-25, they need time to learn to process faster.

I'm not open to signing ANY free agent to a deal longer than a year...and it should only be for additional trade deadline bait.

Why bother? There are enough guys with potential futures fighting for positions on the club. Dragging in FAs, like DH listed above, only gets away of the prospects getting the PT that they need to determine their roles going forward. Keeping a stiff around to hopefully flip them at the TDA for a 4th rounder is a waste of roster space. There already are guys on the club that can fit that role.

Actually, unless Briere picks up some NHL ready prospects, if they trade 2-3 starters, they'll be very thin going into the season.
You don't want to have to play prospects before they're ready, and do you really want to watch Marody, Belpido et al next season?

That's a pretty useless archetype in the modern game. Hence why "defensive specialist galore" Luke Schenn has spent his offseasons learning how to be a good puck mover and more effective offensively. He isn't a defensive specialist anymore. It isn't 2003.

When the best that can be said about a dman is that they play a lot, that means they have no other positives and play for a bad team that has no choice. Or thinks they have no choice because they're badly run.

I like your optimism for Ginning, but sadly I'm convinced his rudimentary tools are inadequate and the rusty holes in his toolbox aren't capable of being filled with the necessary coaching material to help him grow and acquire a better toolset. Again, he can't skate, handle the puck, shoot, and has rocks for brains. Magic 8ball says: Outlook not so good.

To me, him putting it all together as he matures would be seeing him manage to maintain an AHL career. I honestly project him to be relegated back to the SHL or even another step down at the DEL level. I'd love to be wrong though. I hope this doesn't happen and he does pan out somehow, but I'm just calling it like I see it.

And Seeler is still a f***ing scrub, dude. Never was he ever not a scrub, even last year.

Seeler was a solid #6 last season, both TDA and Risto played better with him than other partners, partially b/c of sheltered 3rd pair role, but also b/c Seeler is a reliable partner. Is he more than that, no. But a good partner for someone like Attard while he learns the ropes.
