...to get a better player...Habs have 2 firsts in this draft, not a particular deep one...they also have a rich prospect pool already...at some point, it's time to move out of the rebuilding phase and into the contending phase...
Agree, i would even put the 2 first 2025 + Matheson for the right player.

the problem with this type of trade offer is that nobody wants to do this trade. contenders and bubble teams don't want to downgrade just for the right to draft a future bust who'll never have a spot on the team anyway, rebuilders don't have young RH defensemen worth a 1st. The list of players is basically Dobson and Kesselring and neither team is trading them for a 1st.

You can remove him from this list. Especially if Matheson is in that return.

It's not so much downgrade as go for experience rather than risk having to play a raw rookie. It can be win-win ie, Malakhov for Souray (NJ got a high end D for their 3d pairing, and it worked as they won a Cup; Montreal got a top 4 D for years to come)

A defensively weak (or shallow) contender might be willing to move a raw rookie to add Matheson as a 2nd or 3d pair D... the issue is more that they won't want to acquire a pick, they want useful players now, so it's hard to imagine a team in a position to make this move.

Not happening. Who would pair with Hutson? He is playing his best hockey so far with Matheson as his trade partner.

Guhle got hurt tonight. If he is out for any length of time the Habs can’t lose him and Matheson at the same time.

...they sure can...cuz Playoffs this year aren't happening, so why not get something for a guy that's redundant on the team...Struble can play, probably for Guhle...call up a half decent defensive D to play with Hutson...Habs aren't contending for a Cup now...in a couple years, different story...
