Lauko and Steen are showing they can be a problem for the defense on the forecheck but I wish they had the ability to chip in with some offense more than they have.

I like what both bring but they aren't going to contribute much offensively. They're also too small to really put the fear of God into opponents. Again, the Bruins need two legitimate bangers, one D, one forward.

Yes, I enjoy the bruins winning a fight. But more importantly, I want a team that is a) the aggressor, b) will defend themselves and each other, and c) exploits physicality in the playoffs at a next level

Those are team DNA things, not Peter Worrell things

That's all most of those clamoring for "team toughness" want.

It's not that difficult to establish. But management has to believe in and prioritize the need.

My guess is that Sweeney will address this in season, to whatever degree. But I still don't think he values the idea.

I don’t think Merk looked ready for the NHL even with his limited minutes. Seemed to get pushed around a lot. I think he needs to put on some muscle.

In fairness, aside from being saddled with talent starved plugs for most shifts and limited minutes and no PP time, he did hit a post.

If he scores there, I wonder what we’re all saying about him today.

I love the Bruins kids. For a team that supposedly can't draft they sure have a load of good young players that were home grown.

Whether they need toughness of not hopefully the kings of the regular season can do something this year in the play-offs.

When is the last time a team won it all with a 5-9 guy in the top 4? The jury is most definitely out on this defensive unit who can't seem to get it done when playing in a series. Hopefully the goalies will be superhuman
Bruins came within a win of the cup with a 5'9 Krug, 5'10 Clifton and 5'10 Gryz in the lineup. I don't think you can say those guys being undersized was the reason they lost either.

Honestly I think they only lost because they didn't have a healthy Miller paired with Gryz on the 3rd pair.

A big physical St. Louis team that forechecked hard vs an undersized defense with Miller out, McQuaid traded, and Chara with a broken jaw in game 4 was a pretty major factor. Another was Krejci playing with a post-Kadri DeBrusk and the winner of Be a Bruin on the other side.

I'm skeptical of Jim Montgomery for various reasons, not least shortening the bench, which is untenable. But Haggerty and Marinofsky make a very fair point below.

Later, they discuss employment of the goaltending tandem come playoff time.

Pick up @ 5:30 to hear them out,

Lauzon a gamer, tough as nails, and is hard to play against. He currently leads the league in hits and is always there for his teammates. If he becomes available every and all playoff teams and those teams in the hunt will have Barry Trotz on speed dial.
Good thing we protected Griz over him, wouldn't want a guy like Lauzon who hits everything in sight, is tough to play against and is a great teammate. Nah let's keep Sweeneys favorite instead.

I'm not Gryz guy, and he looks like he may be nearing the end (I would not resign him at any price other than 1 year, really short money). That said Gryz has been a MUCH better hockey player than Lauzon.

If Lauzon was not lost in the expansion draft it is very likely he would have been dumped at some point in the past 2 years to improve over him at the bottom of the lineup. Lauzon hits, but is substandard in all other aspects of the game

Few guys I'd target for a bottom pairing role especially if we are moving Forbort/Gryzz

1. Erik Gudbranson- 25% retained and I would love Gudbranson on the bottom pairing. He'd be a great vet for the team, good PK'er, nasty in front of the net, and can drop the mitts with any of the league heavies.
2. Jake Middleton- Just screams Bruin, born to wear the black and yellow.
3. Luke Schenn- Good veteran stay at home dman, good on the PK and can hit/toss em if needed

I think all of these guys are improvements on Forbort for the role he plays on this team. Issue with Gudbranson and Schenn are they are both RD which would make Shatty the 7th D

I'm far from a forbort fan, but he's put up legitimately good results at 5v5 this season. History says that probably won't continue, but if it does we have no reason to pay assets to upgrade over him.

Also just in general, I just don't see this as a year where you're giving up assets to upgrade the third pair. If the right deal comes along where you can add a top 6 forward or top 4 defenseman and then extend them to be part of the core going forward that's one thing, but beyond that it's time to start saving your assets.

They fill very different needs, the Bruins need a tough physical D, Grizz is not that Lauzon is, they have puck movers and have had them since the Seattle draft, they have not had a truly physical bottom 3 D since Kevan Miller.

Middleton and Schenn both have term left on their deals, problem is Nashville and Minnesota are both vying for the playoffs and I can't see them moving those players. Both would be great additions here.

Him and lindgren, two players who play the game the way that this team desperately lacks and are two of Sweeney draft picks, who he ultimately let go, with nothing to show for either. Ouch !

I want Giroux for this year and next. Plays wing, but is great on faceoffs.

Giroux/Zacha - Giroux/Zacha - Pasta
Marchand - Coyle - Debrusk

Fill out the other 6 with a combo of JVR, Heinen, Pawtwah, Geekie, Frederic

yea, if we can bring in Gionta, Gagne, Rolston, Redden, that guy from New Jersey who's name escapes me, then we can bring in Giroux.

The term is kinda irrelevant to me, I just have very little interest in giving up assets for third pair upgrades given our lack of assets right now.

I too am on the Monty watch; I understand that a coach's job is to win but at the same time because of this being a cap era you need to play the young kids and bring them along . I understand Laukos lack of offense but he does bring some energy, speed to the 4th line, he also has been strong on the fore check, but he takes him out of the lineup consistently for players that do not do anymore offensively that he does. The Beecher situation bears watching, I think as a whole he has played well, but also think you can screw with these young kids frame of mind with ice time and being a healthy scratch situations. They were trying to bring in 3 kids Loheri,Beecher and Poitras, and the fans wanted them too bring Merkolov and Lysell, maybe it is time to pump the brakes a little. Lysell get called out by his coach and the fans want to reward him by promoting him, maybe he should read Pastas playbook when he was a young player and was told what he needed to work , he didn't sulk he went out and worked on what was asked of him. Please no more of this Mekolov should be up here, I saw nothing that says he should and stop whining about his ice time. When they signed Luccic, I did not think much of it and I am a fan, but him being out has been real hit to this team. I am probably going to be ripped for this but I don't care, get off they need a #1 C, not going to happen at this time without it costing this team big time. The Bruins have no draft picks to move and shouldn't , I do not want too trade for a Giroux, Lindholm over thirty or approaching thirty type player that is going to cost a fortune to sign, but I would go after a younger D-man like a Hanifan, Chychrun or even a younger forward that could help this team now, even if it means moving a Loheri, Poitras, Lysell, Mekolov and when I say Poitras, I do not mean rush out to move him only on deal that is beneficial to this club now. I know Loheri is everbodys binky this year , but if you can a young d-man with nhl experience do it.

I think we need to stop calling the young players "kids".

They are young men, professional athletes. Hockey was the whole show for them for quite a while before they were even drafted. They know the score. Just like all the players on the team, they are individuals who progress at different rates. Can't treat them all the same, but they all need to adhere to the same team framework. Frederic is 25, in his 6th year as a pro. He may be just about figuring it all out now.
