Maybe its like chad green's deal. 1 year can turn into 2 with opt ins and whatnot. But 1 yr deal cam turn into 6 haha

Will Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s contract status loom over the entire season?

Even though the Blue Jays will be reporting to Dunedin, Fla., to prepare for the 2025 season, the future of the 2026 team is likely the biggest question out there for the Blue Jays. Guerrero, who will turn 26 in March, is entering the final season of team control with the only team he’s ever known. The son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero and a native Canadian (he was born in Montreal, but grew up in the Dominican Republic), the younger Guerrero avoided arbitration with a one-year deal worth $28.5 million in 2025, the third-largest contract ever paid to an arbitration-eligible player, behind just Juan Soto ($31 million in 2024) and Shohei Ohtani ($30 million in 2023).

Both Soto and Ohtani went to free agency and did OK for themselves ($1.465 billion between them), but not only did those two players choose new teams, but also both seemingly treated the Blue Jays as a viable but lesser option when making their choices. Both of those pursuits show Toronto has the money Guerrero is looking for, but the fact those funds haven’t been used for him could create an uneasy start to 2025. — C. Trent Rosecrans

Pivetta just went to the Padres, 4 yrs $55M with opt outs per Passan.

That has the potential to work out really well, but seems odd given they are reportedly shopping Cease and others to lower payroll.

Yeah at this point its virtually a guarantee that he will go to free agency. The time to extend him was 2-3 years ago. they tried to lowball him so now they're in this predicament, and will just get a draft pick for him

First impression is that's a lose lose deal for Boston.

He either sucks and you're stuck with a boat anchor for the next 3 years as your younger pieces go into their prime. Or he's really good and goes right back to market as soon as he can.

Yeah, it feels like the only way he opts out after 2025 is if he hits 40+ HR (he IS in Fenway now) and feels like he can get $150+ million. And even then he might be better off just taking his $40 million a year and hoping he can get a decent contract when this one is up.

It's a good addition that obviously makes Boston better, but I don't like that contract very much for them.
