So, for instance, in your view if we moved Girard for forward help or futures to open cap space, would he be perfectly capable of nailing down that #5 spot who can play up on the second pair as long as Manson's the other guy?
Potentially capable, but I'm not making that trade until either a) Byram's proven he can stay healthy or b) Behrens has proven he can play in the NHL. We won't have either of those answers until next year at the earliest. I wouldn't say Behrens is a sure thing, but he has NHL potential. You don't always know how these things will turn out though - for instance, I was personally higher on Timmins 5 years ago than I am on Behrens now.

That was a good feeling to have about Timmins.

He's an NHL defender. Hope Behren's follows in his path, though with hopefully a quicker less injury plagued transition to the NHL.

Behrens is probably 2 years minimum from being an impact player for the Avs. The window is now and this year is crucial. If they can snag a piece of the puzzle for years to come then yes, trade him.
I'm just really concerned about our cap situation. We've got over 30M locked in NMCs next season (Landy 7M, MacK 12.6M, Nuke 6.125M, Manson 4.5M). That doesn't include Cale's 9M (how did he not get an NMC?) or Rant's 9.25M. On top of that we've got Byram to resign, Girard taking 5M, and Toews taking 4.1 until the end of next season.

Still not sure Girard has the perceived value to bring in a 2C as the main piece. But in order to get a long term upgrade to JTC at 2C, we will simply have to lose one of Rants, Toews, Byram, or Girard. (I'm willing to bet nobody myself included actually thinks Rants is the right answer). If this is the case Behrens would be safe because we are already sending a really good dman.

However, if looking at a rental, you take the cap situation and combine that with the uncertainty regarding Byram's health and our ability (and frankly desire if his play continues to dip) to re-sign Toews. We are going to need dmen in the next few years. The question is, can Behren's be that player in that timeline. Because if he can, I think he's more important to us than he would be in a trade. I think he and Foudy would be the two prospects I would be giving a lot of pause to before including them in a trade this spring. I would not be pulling the trigger for a double and would be seriously hesitant on a triple. You've got to absolutely nail it if you are giving up one of these two guys from your meager prospect pool.

The cap situation is a mess and I think Behrens is going to be a very good #3D... I'd trade him in a heartbeat to make this team have a better shot. Best case is Behrens is top 4 ready in 24-25 (after which he's likely getting a big raise complicating the cap more in Mikko's UFA year). The timeframe between now and then is too important to sacrifice as the window is certainly closing by 26-27 season, likely earlier before this team has to re-tool.

Isn't there value to him being the 3rd LD next year if we move Girard for a forward?

I don’t come around often anymore. Usually only when I have something to say or ask and I can’t find the answers on Twitter myself lol. But someone that caught my eye last year and started to hope for his potential is not up to much this year. Matt Stienburg. 6 points in 13 games. Anyone know what’s going on with him? Imagine he’s been hurt with the GP.

Last game I saw he played was Dec 29 so probably is hurt. He’s just not that talented, idk I’m sure they’ll sign him and see what he can do in the AHL.

Anyone care to go out on a limb and give me Behren's NHL ceiling and floor? Or his most likely NHL comp?

But they also didn't keep him in the NHL too long when it became apparent he needed work. Would Kovalenko agree to moving down to the AHL in order to hone his NA game if necessary?

[edit...the reason I ask, is that I can very easily see an NHL player in him. I just worry that he might get discouraged because of the transition to the NA game. But I suppose his father has talked to him plenty about that.]
Meyers only went down for 10 games. I don’t think a short stay like that would be a deal breaker with a return ticket to come back up.

Behrens is like a third pair pp2 guy in the NHL. Not much offense but at least decent puck skill. I doubt the Avs are going to be very proactive with his development plan though. Maybe if he stays his junior year that will buy him some leverage.

They tried to sign him last season, but he wanted to play his senior year due to the year he lost from injury and covid.

What's with Bowers? Is he back from his injury? Will he get another chance with the Avs?

Considering that Sakic and Kovalenko-Sr. played together a bit I have to think there might be some other communication channel.
Do you think that relationship could allow some negotiation when his KHL season ends?

I know you’ve chimed in on this before and I appreciate you’re input on the situation. But I really want Kovalenko in the Avs bottom 6 for the playoffs lol.

Not possible this year obviously, as he is contracted for the next season in the KHL.
