Thought this was cool, saw this on my social media feed. Rick Pracey killed us.

The GM should get a lot of the blame. They should have axed a large number of their amateur scouts a long time ago.

The Avs would be a complete wagon this decade if they drafted just decently, now they barely get anything out of ELCs.

Just noticed Ozolinsh is one of our amateur scouts. How long has he been a scout with the team?

I was surprised to learn that Spencer Martin has played 29 games with the Canucks this year. Rocking a .871 and a 3.99 GAA. I assumed he was in the ECHL or something.

So Buylasky got injured again to go along with Stienburg, who's missed a little over a month I believe...
Martin absolutely should be in the ECHL, he's terrible. But props to him for parlaying 6 good games into 1.5m.
He's definitely not an ECHL level, that's for goalers like Miner/Parik and Martin is night and day better than them. I love Martin, but he's clearly out of his zone in the NHL. He's slow, can't track the puck well enough, can't anticipate plays, and his reaction speed for shots is very much lacking. I wish him success, but all he is is a solid A-level AHL backup who can play at least start half of the games of a season. Which is still better than 95% of the hockey world.

Buyalsky was sick (flu) from what I heard.

Martin being better than 95% of the hockey world doesn’t mean he’s any good. He’s not an A level AHL backup either. That’s the JoJo level guys (and he sucks too).

Both are the same type of goalers in the AHL, but Martin is the more talented of the two (way better movement even if he sucks at it, which shows how bad Johansson is). They are solid AHL career journeymen that can be used as backup goalers to help develop your team's top 90 selection goaltender from a few years ago. Neither of them are ones I would personally sign as I would go a level or two higher and always have someone like Delia in my system, but that's just me. JoJo is having a pretty fluke season if you compared it to the rest of his career.

To be fair to JoJo, this is the first year he's really gotten any run in the AHL since 19-20. I think he played just 28 games from Covid to this season and it was literally all over the map. This year he is actually playing more games and getting some consistency back. Now the Eagles do play a great system and are one of the better setup team to handle his deficiencies.

But neither are the guy I'd want to be my AHL tandem guy. I'd want a Tokarski/Dacord/Lyon sort personally.

How are you surprised? He literally started against the Avs and won.
Lol. I missed both the Vancouver games.

Also I’d add that the surprising part is that he played that many games and is their actual back up not a 3rd or 4th guy.

He had a really good year last season in the AHL and had amazing success in his short NHL stint too. This season has been a trainwreck and while JT Miller is the poster boy for poor defensive effort the rest of the team is also really bad defensively. I don't think I've seen a team give up easier lateral passes or high danger passes than the Canucks have recently. It's truly atrocious how they play in the defensive zone.

We're being hyperbolic here. Spencer Martin isn't an ECHLer and he's better than JoJo. JoJo can barely track shots and is the true embodiment of "be big and get in front of shots" when he's in the NHL. He works in the NHL under very specific circumstances. I'd chose Martin as the no. 3 over JoJo any day of the week. Martin can at least track shots. Martin is a mid level no. 3 goalie and his success at the NHL depends on where he ends up. With the Canucks it's a terrible fit this season because he just doesn't have good lateral movement and the Canucks are giving that up a lot. He's also playing the shot and being aggressive when the Canucks can't cover the back door to save their lives.

The success of the no. 3 goalies that aren't prospects depends on their fit and I've been beating this drum for awhile. If you don't have a prospect on the cusp you need a no. 3 goalie that will play well behind your defensive system. Pheonix Copley isn't having a good year because he took a huge leap forward, he's just a really good fit for the Kings system. Copley is the antithesis of Quick/Petersen which is why his stats are massively better than theirs. If Copley was in Arizona or Columbus or Ottawa he'd be looking a lot worse. Being on a good team doesn't mean automatic success for these no. 3 type goalies as we saw with Hunter Miska (tried to warn the Avs).

TL;DR the Canucks really tanked Martin's stats this year. He's not a everyday NHLer however in the right system he's a fine no. 3 and I'd take him over JoJo every day of the week because he can actually see the majority of shots coming towards him. Being a no. 3 goalie in the vein of Martin (non-prospect) is all about fit and the fit in Vancouver was really bad this season.

I don't get the idea that Martin was helped last year by the system, but failed this year by the same system? Martin was just on a heater last year.

Martin was flat out terrible in Syracuse to the point where Groulx would play just about anybody else over him at any chance. This came on the heels of him struggling in the Avs' organization. Really Martin has only put up one good AHL season in his whole career, last year.

Now Copley, that's a good #3. He's had ups and downs in the AHL, but a few good years, shown he could handle some NHL games (but also showed he's not a NHLer), and he plays a sound game.

I wasn't clear in this and that's my bad. It's not a system thing that hurt Martin this season, it's a lack of execution. Of course Martin was on a heater last season. Doesn't mean there's not a base level of success there that can be achieved once that hot streak is over. You still have to have some NHL skill to go on a streak like that. We've never seen JoJo or Miska do it because they lack most NHL skills despite playing behind stacked teams.

I don't doubt that Martin was bad in Syracuse. I've seen the numbers. Goalies can change in the off-season and make big steps with some adjustments if the talent is there. Chris Driedger was in the ECHL, out of the Ottawa dev system then goes to Florida and takes off. Vancouver has Ian Clark and his goalie dev system, it's not hard to believe Martin benefitted from that enough to stick around as a mid level no. 3 for a couple of years at worst. Even Miska turned one big year with the Eagles into a few extra years before leaving to Germany.

Copley is a good no. 3 in that you put him in the right situation and he'll have a lot of success. We're seeing it in LA and we saw it in Washington. He's the ideal guy if you know the system will work with him because even though there are glaring weaknesses he still has enough strengths that if you force the opposing team into his strengths he looks good at least statistically. Once you're in about the 50-80 range in terms of goalie rankings, their numbers really start to rely on how good of a fit they are.

Any interest in this guy?
Yes, but reason he's leaving is Anaheim is stacked on defensive prospects. He's not gonna want to sign here in Colorado with Toews, Byram, and G on the left side. He's going to go to a place where he can get immediate minutes and likely top 4 minutes.

Harvard is getting a rep...

His presence on our roster would facilitate a honkin' trade. :naughty:
