Makar is silkier as a skater and more explosive. In terms of raw speed, Byram might have him beat. Both guys can cover a lot ground in a hurry.

The separator for Makar comes in his hockey IQ, hands, and shot.

IMO their IQ is on par with each other. Bo's IQ is really high level in all three zones. The hands, shot, and insane athleticism Cale has are what separates him for me. It's what separates him from everyone.

Cale's hands don't get talked about enough. After his skating, they're his biggest strength IMO. Maybe even just as much as his skating.

He handles the puck and shoots like an elite forward. You don't see defenseman do that because they don't get enough reps with the puck to build that kind of skill. Bo is elite for a defenseman the way he handles the puck and shoots, but he's still not in Cale's league. No one is.

If Cale played forward, and didn't have to focus on defense, I think he might be putting up numbers like McDavid is right now. I think he'd play a similar style too.

Does anyone know know if the Avs are in on any of the college free agents playing in the Frozen Four?

Some potential good gets for the Avs/Eagles would be:

- Yaniv Perets, G, Quinnipiac
- Zach Metsa, RHD, Quinnipiac
- Collin Graf, RW, Quinnipiac
- Ethan de Jong, RW, Quinnipiac
- Jacob Quillan, LW, Quinnipiac
- Wilmer Skoog, C, Boston University
- Matt Brown, C, Boston University
- TJ Hughes, C, Michigan
- Jaxon Nelson, C, Minnesota

Also some drafted college guys whose rights will expire this summer (obviously some will sign with the team that drafted them/has their rights after the Frozen Four), but I know for certain that some won’t:

- Skyler Brind'Amour, C, Quinnipiac
- Ethan Phillips, RW, Boston University
- Dom Fensore, LHD, Boston University
- Case McCarthy, RHD, Boston University
- Jay O'Brien, C, Boston University
- Erik Portillo, G, Michigan
- Ryan Johnson, LHD, Minnesota
- Jackson LaCombe, LHD, Minnesota

Malinski's having a nice start to his pro career too.

3 goals 5 points in 7 regular season games with the Eagles. 5 points in 5 games (all assists) so far in the playoffs.

Going deep in the playoffs would be great for his development too. Will help the Avs evaluate how NHL ready he may be next year as well.

And for that reason, no on Zach Metsa!
By the way, this guy's father Tom Metsa was born in Virginia, MN, which leads me to believe someone somewhere dropped some dots off the top of that A.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm not explaining it.

So for the prospect rankings this summer, it looks like Sam Malinski is too old to make the list, since he's 24 already. It would have been interesting to see where he landed after the immediate impact he made in Loveland. Jason Polin turns 24 next month, but I think I'll include him because the rules we use say "has not yet played the season of his 24th birthday". I'm not sure how that works with summer bdays, but he's borderline and the pool is small, so he'll be in the mix. And Ondrej Pavel is 23, so he's in the polls too. I'm not including any of the college UFAs on non-ELC AHL contracts as prospects.

Is it fair to say Fantilli would've gone 1st overall in every draft except this year and 2015 in the last 10 years?

Matthews yes, Hughes I don't think would go over Fantilli. Fantilli showed his production in a more competitive league, and has the size advantage as well.

Hughes was/is that class with Matthews just a fringe away from the generational talents. There were only a select few records for the USNTDP that he didn't break prior to leaving the program... including many of Matthews. I know people like to harp on the size, but the hype was a better, center version of Patrick Kane. Fantilli is a fantastic prospect, but he's a notch below sure thing franchise level forward. He's a potential franchise forward, but that falls in the realm below the sure thing group.

Dahlin is a potential one above too. Defensemen tend to get the short end of the stick at the top of the draft, but he was a generation prospect.

We could use him ASAP for a stronger 3rd/4th line. Can we buy out his contract? Get Enos on the phone!

An opportunity to view highlights of a Russian prospects game in the KHL is definitely new to me. This is the kind of coverage we’ve been looking for.
