I've watched a lot of Oilers games in 2023 and I don't see anything special in Broberg. BUT, I wonder if EDM's unique environment plays a role. That said, he can't out perform Ceci, who admittedly is playing better than he did in TOR, but still is Cody Ceci.
I wonder if the Sharks could do a Rutta-for-Ceci swap in exchange for a pick. Saves Edmonton a little in cap space...

This team is still far far away from being a contender.

The goal is to acquire more and more picks to give the Sharks more opportunities to draft potentially good and useful players.

The point of taking on salary dumps is to get picks and prospects. Taking on Campbell should require 1ast rounder. The mostly deal would be a protected pick in say 2027-2028 drafts.

Even when you are competing extra draft picks are needed irrespective of the the development phase.

The better question is if there are better salary dumps to take on.

Trade deadline ideas:
Duclair (50% off) to Carolina for 2nd pick (PHI) and Dylan Coghlan (RD)
(get a young defencemen and 2nd pick)
Barabanov, Benning, MacDonald for Schmidt and 2nd pick ('25)
(get a veteran defencemen and a pick, WPG gets cap relief. Schmidt has M-NTC so this could backfire. He has been playing in their 3rd pair, so it's logical to get someone cheaper there)
Ferraro to Buffalo for 2x 2nd round picks ('24 and '25)
(this has been hot topic, and in some trade scenarios Buffalo fans have been okay about getting him even with Sharks getting one of the Rosen/Östlund)

I'm still not sure if Kähkönen should be traded since he will be a free agent next summer.
If he doesn't get signed by the TDL, I think you trade him for anything you can get.

Historically, the Sharks have avoided accumulating too many draft picks in a single year. For logistical reasons, I assume.

The Sharks don't need to take on a bad long-term contract, especially considering Grier has done a great job of getting rid of plenty of salary over the past couple of years. Whatever we'd get in return wouldn't be worth it.
The question is: is Huberdeau cooked, or can he bounce back? Getting some futures for a guy who can be a secondary piece might not be a bad idea.

One thing being cooked but another just down right giving up. You can't invest in a comeback for a guy who's putting no effort or energy in his current on ice situation. Feels similar to 44#

A handful of draft picks don't guarantee anything, even if a couple of them are 1sts. But that contract guarantees pain for over half a decade and for a franchise that is still feeling the negative effects of bad contracts, it would be ridiculous to consider taking another one on.

If we’re about 2 years behind Anaheim’s rebuild Calgary is about another 2 years behind our own. Trading multiple 1sts just to dump Huberdeau would be like if we had traded multiple 1sts just to dump Karlsson back in 2021. Total disaster waiting to happen.

Except Huberdeau has seven and a half years remaining on his deal, not four, and unlike Karlsson Huberdeau has never and will never even sniff a major award, in addition to playing the least important position in the game. Huberdeau’s contract is so long that when we are trying to compete, he’ll still be on the books, unlike Karlsson/Couture/Vlasic/etc.

It’s like the Hertl contract you complain about, except if Hertl cost $2M more per year and was a soft, useless, one-way winger with no leadership value.

Obviously the Flames can’t afford to attach the number of 1st round picks to Huberdeau that it would take to move him without crippling their franchise for years. That’s why that contract is going nowhere. The Flames are just going to have to eat it.
