Marner is at the mercy of his opposition as far as time and space goes. If they crank up the intensity and take away his time and space he becomes a puck flipper.

Sadly, Marner is a soft, small non-physical winger, who becomes the equivalent of bringing a Knife to a Gun fight when regular season hockey becomes playoff tight checking, hard hitting, pressure filled Cup winning hockey.

Against Columbus .. 0 goals 4 assists 4 points in 5 games & Season Over
Against Montreal ... 0 goals 4 assists 4 points in 7 games & Season Over
Against Florida ... 1 goal 2 assists 3 points in 5 games & Season Over
Last year against Boston 1 goal 2 assists 3 points in 7 games & Season Over

Over 4 losing series 2 goals 12 assists a mere 14 points in 24 games. Even as a PPG player Mitch owes us 10 missing goals and assists to reach the floor of production expectations. This is what the Leafs are getting for $11 mil a year return on investment and this guy thinks he should be making + $13 mil on next deal.

Leafs might as well use Marner just to make the playoffs, and then put him in the press box for the playoffs, insert a playoff performer for what little contribution they get once the REAL hockey begins. Surely one can find 3rd and 4th line players making a lot less, capable of scoring 2 goals over 24 games over 4 losing series.

Mitch Marner is the epitome of a "Regular season Warrior, but a playoff Paper Tiger". and its so damn frustrating as a diehard Maple Leafs fan to watch this guy struggle year after painful year of early Leaf exits to endure.

This has to be LAST CHANCE for Mitch to put up or shut-up and move on this year.

Sooner rather than later the statue of limitations of SECOND chances has got to run out for Marner.

He is currently 0-8 in the playoffs and when was the last time any Leaf fan said .. Thank goodness we had Magic Mitch in the playoffs or we would have been an easy out in Round #1? We are that easy OUT because of his direct lack of contribution.

That is why I'm hoping that Leafs DO NOT commit any contract extension until Marner shows up in this years playoffs and is also a Difference Maker as anyone would expect if you want to be one of the highest paid players in the game.

In Edmonton McDavid plays on a line with a Rocket winner and a grinder who put up 50+ goals last year. With team Canada, they have him with a 57 goal scorer and an 82 assist, soft, perimeter player. Will be interesting to see how it works out.

Here's hoping the Tkachuk brothers bring their A game. The last thing I want to see is another All Star exhibition game. Then again, that is the only championship the 3 amigos have won as a threesome.

Marner is an elite player and has been the best leaf forward more times than any other forwards this year (yes, even Willy). However, the criticisms of his playoff performances are completely warranted; he doesn't have a next gear. I would be ok with him not being a physical player, but he lacks tenacity when things get hard. Mitch is great at reading a play offensively and defensively, but he often doesn't enhance that by bursts of sheer effort which can lead to key turnovers or restarting a broken up offensive play. He has a had handful of games where he showed it, and Keefe and him called it "buzzing" or something to that extent. Like, it's ok to fail, but I want to notice you failing hard and gassed if that happens. He needs to bring that consistently, win or lose, in the playoffs, but I don't think he gets that it's a wall he needs to break though. By the way, I also believe this applies to Mathews.

I don't dislike Mitch Marner; I want him to succeed, naturally. But the point of this whole thing isn't to have really, really good players; it's to win the Stanley Cup. If he can't do it, and his future contract prevents the team from getting a player who can, then how can one justify keeping him?

1. Beside Rantanen, I don’t think any potential UFAs can provide MM’s numbers
2. Impact players have to look at Team success rather than just individual points. I am not even talking about different positions. Let’s say Leafs use the MM’s caphit on another Winger and C. Their total points productions might not be as good as MM plus Holmeberg or Dewar. Since only one of them will be able to play in MM’s PP spot

To me, you can’t refuse to change bc you are afraid you can’t find proper replacements. Like what’s the worse that can happen with the Leafs, they are just a playoffs team.

That’s why if they choke again this playoffs, changes has to be made bc it’s obvious that current core is not working.
It is not against MM or JT. If Tre can trade Reilly and Willie and AM then resign MM and JT, that’s great. Changes must happen if they continue to choke in playoffs.

Maybe Choke is not the right word as if they continue to just be First round folders, that means they didn’t choke, they are just not that good.

From what I’ve seen over the years, teams that are ready to seriously contend for a championship usually make a handful of good roster decisions and that produces a momentum that picks up steam, translates on the ice and away they go.

I don’t see a Marner mandate change being the most obvious path to getting into gear for a cup run. Rantanen would be the only viable replacement and I would be happy to entertain that scenario. But short of that it looks like a step or two backwards in the short to medium term, spread out the talent and money and regroup a little bit. Not necessarily the wrong direction but I don’t think it’s going to be a Huberdeau for Tkachuk kind of cute all.

I too am curious but it can’t be worse the the previous 6-7 years of crap show playoffs
