I hate the idea of Trouba on the Sharks, because he is a stupid player who should have been banned.

Isn't the entire point to improve this shitty defense?

I can understanding having one of Walman, Fabbro or Liljegren but these are all the same guy.

Trouba, Ekblad, Borgen, Whitecloud and Kesselring could be available next summer. That's the market we should be shopping in.
At this point I'm just interested in adding talent to the defense, we only have 3 NHL caliber D men on the roster, if we can add any more I'll take them on regardless of their play style

I'm not gonna turn my nose up at upgrading from Jan Rutta to Dante Fabbro because he doesn't play with enough sandpaper, aquire talent now and worry about fit later

Would love to have any of those free agent defencemen, but I'm afraid we'll be overshadowed by teams that are winning now. That's why I feel like a trade should be the way to go first. If there is someone available @ Free Agency and willing sign, take him as well. The more the better.

I’ve always loved the idea of Trouba on the sharks, but I worry his rambunctious physicality will ultimately put a target on one of our kids’ backs.

Trouba is not a FA and can be acquired as a cap dump. If his wife wants a good hospital to work at Stanford is close by.

Trouba and Ekblad are the 2 D that I want and the Sharks have the cap space to acquire both.

Hard pass on Ekblad for me unless he would sign for 3 years or less which is not happening. The guys body is breaking down, Look at all the serious injuries he has been through and all the games he has missed. He is going to be 29, his play is on the decline and he is going to be looking for a 7 year contract to a contender, so for him to sign with us we would have to beat out the market in terms of $.

We are hopefully in playoff/cup contention around the 4-5 year mark, and I expect an Ekblad contract is really going to hamper the team. He will be 34-35 and honestly might look similar to what we have in Vlasic today.

Yes Ekblad looks like a good fit in the short term but in those final few years where we want to be competitive I bet his contract will bite us in the ***

I think we need to make a hard push for Theodore in the off-season. Like a 7x$8m deal. He's a little injury prone but his playmaking would transform our defense and he'd easily be a top pairing 1st PP guy for us for the next 5 years.

I think it makes sense to push for Theodore but I don't see Vegas letting him walk.

The problem for Vegas is if they can fill out their roster while keeping Theodore. They only have 12 players signed for next season and about $25m in space. Most of their core is locked up though but I think there's an opportunity there.

I think the team is gonna have a hard time signing halfway decent players entering their thirties unless you pay them an outrageous overpay. Shea will have a market so why would he want to waste his last prime years on a team that’s not close to competing?

Luckily for them, the bulk of their needs to fill out the roster are depth forwards and goaltending. 17 mil to sign seven forwards, a couple goalies, and a defenseman when it's depth pieces outside the starting goalie is doable. They're doing something similar this season.

So far, ranking defensemen who have played:

1) Walman
2) Ceci
3) Ferraro
4) Thompson
5) Benning
6) Thrun
7) Rutta

Any disagreements? Of course, the major caveat is that Thompson only has two games.

Personally, I have ero faith in GMMG when it comes to buulding this team and signing UFAs.

This offseason, he signed toffoli, which was a great signing, but hen threw 10's of million to Wennberg, Kunin, Grundstrom, Dyllandrea, Goodrow etc. This was after several millions to lindbom, sturm, benning, and several others.

I dont know if Grier was trying to lose this year (or last year) and thats why he purposely gave garbage 10s of millions of dollars. However, if he was actually trying to win, he has so spectacularly failed to sign well, that its almost laughable. I HATED the wennberg signing (look back through all the old posts), and its turned out as expected.

Grier has drafted well (I think, though of course until they play in the NHL all the love of musty, cherny, dick etc remains TBD)., and his trades for walman and ceci were solid. Askarov is obviously very promising too. But, to build a winner, you have to add actual talent in the UFA market. I have ZERO trust in grier to do it. I also have Zero trust in his development and medical staff. How many more pointless 2 penalty games does Smith need to have to realize that he was better served starting the AHL?

obviously the celly bad luck hurts, but If grier had spent the 25M this summer on respectable players (10M unspent and approx 15M on Goodie+kunin+wennberg+grund+dyll), we would be a solid team. nearly every game is close. We are 2 or 3 more toffoli-like players from being 4-2-1 instead of 0-5-2. If grier had half a brain and a modicum of skill in idetifying talent, he could have gotten them.

Needless to say, im really pissed, and really disappointed.

My bets arent lookin' too good :-(

p.s.: all this talk of getting a good UFA D is pointless with grier at the helm. He will throw millions to other team's #6/7 guys and more 4th line grinders. What a crap GM when it comes to adding free agent talent...

Agreed but I would probably switch Thompson and Ferraro based on the two games Thompson has played

This is funny to me. What kind of free agents are you expecting to sign as the absolute worse team in the league? The fact that he got a free agent the caliber of Toffoli, arguably the biggest free agent signing in franchise history, is a miracle at this stage in the rebuild.

I’d switch Thrun and Ruuta. I’ve at least seen Jan make some decent defensive plays.

Methinks that if you’re getting pissed off at this team and then needing to post that fact to everyone, take a break. Focus on something you can control and feel better.

I’d put Ferraro at the bottom, simply because I think he’s a terrible dman. I hope we find a way to move on from him at the deadline or this offseason. Great in the dressing room or not he was terrible last season and hasn’t been much better this season through 7 games.

Any disagreements? Of course, the major caveat is that Thompson only has two games.
1) Walman - head and shoulders above the rest. I think sometimes provides to much space defending rushes allowing free shots and passes.
2) Thompson - two games and both good.
3) Ceci - Started the season strong but has dropped in quality the last 3 or so games not offering much in tying up net front players or disrupting passing lanes. Better than I expected though overall.
4) Thrun - Was awful with Benning, but I like what I've seen with Thompson. Definitely has a lot of room for improvement though.
5) Ferraro - He is as expected. High energy and all effort. Problem is that means he is chasing the puck out of position, getting puck focused and not paying attention to his surroundings. Have also noticed him joining the rush and getting in the way to forwards.
6) Rutta - A slower version of Ferraro. Chasing the puck, including up to the blue line.
7) Benning - Has been extremely poor this season (by his standards too!). Obviously coming back from injury, he is even slower than usual and whilst he can move the puck he is making horrific decisions.

I dunno, maybe youre right. Maybe no one wanted to come so there was nothing Grier could do. I dunno. Its just annoying...
