The fact that Winnipeg wants players who can contribute now certainly tells me they would have major interest in Sam Girard. They have a hard time retaining players so getting a 25 year old top 4 defenseman on a fair contract with 4 years of term would have to be attractive to them.

I feel that the reason the Jets would trade PLD is due to him being unwilling to commit to an extension. I still strongly believe he wants to go to the Habs with all those reports that have been released. So, is he just a one year rental? Is it worthwhile to go all in on a one year rental?

Getting excited (cautiously) for the off-season, it's always fun for speculation and the excitement of adding new players... who are your favorite player additions that got you fired up for the Avs that you can remember?

I'm cheating, but my favorite acquisition related memory was the period of June 21st - July 1st, 2019.

Avs draft Byram and Newhook, trade Soderberg, acquire Burakovsky, sign Bellemare and Donskoi, and finally trade Barrie and Kerfoot/acquire Kadri.

All the moves, in unison with the Panarin rumors swirling, made it an exciting time to be a Colorado fan. You could tell Sakic and co. were building something special.

I think the only way we'd afford an extension in any case is basically what Girard is making plus what Newhook might need be getting? So 7-7.5?

Kadri trade was an exciting time. We needed Kadri in the worst way and offloading an excess asset in Barrie and trading extra weight in Kerfoot.

Never forget Leaf fans coming to realization that Barrie was just an Offensive Defenseman and didn't really solve any of their issues at the time. They were so adamant that Barrie was gonna be something for them and we tried to tell them what he was.

For PLD, I think it's important to note that there is a difference between him and Scheifele/Lindholm. PLD is already in the last year of his contract and will be a RFA at the end of this month and at that point would be without a contract for next season.

So I think IF the Avs trade for him, the only way that happens is if they know 1) that he's interested in actually signing long-term with the team and 2) approximately what it's going to cost. I believe that's an 8x8 deal at minimum and it could be more than that.

I think both PLD and Lindholm would require an extension in place before you make those deals. The cost would be too high for just a 1 year rental.

I don't know what the price on Scheifele would be as a 30 year old with 1 year left at $6.125. I wouldn't be against the Avs going that route but if they do, they HAVE to go all in for Spring 2024.

One other possibility that I could see is that Montreal really wants PLD and making his acquisition could mean that a guy like Kirby Dach could be available. While he can easily play wing and did so for the first half of last season, the Habs really need to improve their defense so maybe there's a deal to be made there, if things kind of fall that way. Dach signed for the next 3 years at $3.625M is pretty much the perfect kind of medium-risk/high reward acquisition that would work for our cap situation.

I’m not at all worried about leadership. I’m very concerned about the forward group.
