Newhook can help them now. Something around PLD and Newhook sounds just about right.
It will take a lot more than Newhook to outbid everyone else if/when PLD becomes available.

Especially if he's open to re-up somewhere else...if he is then he's going to return a King's ransom. Newhook would look like a throw-in for that return package, he wouldn't be a main piece.

They only have 1 D signed beyond 2025. Girard might have more value to them than some other teams since WPG isnt exactly a big FA destination. His term gives them leverage in a scenario where Pionk wants too much money or simply wants to walk.

JT Miller might make sense to them for a similar reason. Although that's admittedly somewhat different due to age.

I think Scheifele is our target, and we could do a lot worse. Guy is a hockey nut and I think he fits into the personalities in the room. I see him thriving in a 2C role here.
Scheifele is the best fit for one year solution. Don't think cMAC is looking to trade premium assets for a one year solution though...especially not with the emptiest cupboard in the NHL.

We gotta spend those trade chips wisely.

Meh. Not saying you're wrong but there's been noise about him being a bad leader (because he's influenced by Blake Wheeler) and also not always giving effort at both ends of the ice.

The guy is also 30 which makes other options better if looking at the viability of signing the person long term.

Having said that, most all of the options that have been discussed have some degree of warts.

Pretty much confirmed to be $1M today by Bettman. But not officially yet I dont think.
If this is the case it’s actually best case for the Avs since they have Landy’s LTIR this year.

We probably have it for several years but we know we have it this year. Honestly I think I take advantage of no jump and try to lock Byram up long term right now. If you bridge him for 2 years he’s gonna he re-signing 2 years from now with a 2 year bigger sample size, 2 years of RFA already bought up and a 10ish M bump to the salary cap which will inflate all salaries around the league.

A 1M bump this year sucks in a lot of ways but every team in the league will have the same challenges. There’s ways to use that minimal bump to take care of some contracts now.

People seriously need to go watch Scheifele play if you think he is the answer.

Offensively? Still pretty good.

Defensively? F***ing train wreck. Seriously, he might be one of the worst defensive forwards in the league today.
Didn't you say the exact same thing about JT Miller the other day? Avs have the wingers to make up for it. We need a 2C with above average offense.

The issue with Scheifele is his expiring contract and he'll be too old and too expensive to re-up.

Definitely did not. I may have in the past but he seemed to turn a corner under Tocchet a bit.

Want nothing to do with Scheifele. He was so bad at centre he got forced to the wing, and Winnipeg isn't exactly flush with offensive centres.

Unless he comes super cheap (he won't) he is an easy pass.

You must watch plenty of Winnipeg lol.

My idea is Newhook and two 1sts in 2023 or the second being a 2024 depending on timing etc for PLD. Get a third team in on Girard if needed. That currency is flexibility without adding a ton of salary. Girard should be worth at least a 1st, if not a first and a damn good prospect to the right team.

A GM isn't only thinking about the next move usually, but on the main board a lot of people seem to think like that lol.

If PLD does not want to stay, flip him in a sign/trade to where ever he wants to go that wants to pay him. Repurpouse the assets.

If by some miracle Montreal actually wants to pay him, ask for one of the two or three (can't remember all of their young centers names) they can't pay now or soon.

I like the idea of doing:

- Girard + Malgin for Mittelstadt + 2023 2nd(BUF)
- Newhook + 2023 1st + 2023 2nd(BUF) for Scheifele @50%.

Then you've got your 4 Centers for next year of Mack, Scheifele, Mittelstadt, Meyers. And they would still have a decent chunk of cap space to spend on some decent Top 9 wingers in free agency(Would love to get Barbashev).

Then next year you let Scheifele walk away and Mittelstadt takes over as 2C.

My preference for a signed Lindholm or PLD:

Two of: Alex Newhook, the 2023 1st, or the 2024 1st.

and

One of: Sam Girard or Sean Behrens

I could see that working out well too. If we can pry out one of these younger centers coming up we should. Casey seems like a good kid. Got his signature and talked to him for a few minutes at the WJSS right after the draft. Brady Tkachuk was sitting right next to him lol. Shoulda got that sig on my USA hockey hoody though.

Might be talking out of my ass here, but he doesn't seem like a high work rate buzz saw, more Mikko's chill cerebral mindset. He's obviously learning and making progress.

Yeah, I don't get it on valuing both of those guys similarly. For us I think Behrens may have more value ELC etc.

I'm also solidly on the keep Toews train if he'll play ball on the contract. Reminds me a little of Giordano.

It's not valuing them similarly. It's more about what might motivate the other side.
