DNVR guys pumping ROR's tires on the pod yesterday was interesting. You think they could see how toast he was. They were throwing around some larger numbers for his salary... kinda odd.

This probably sounds harsh, but they just aren’t very good evaluators of talent.

That's obvious lol. They thought Kaut was an NHL'er til mid season.
Their overall hockey knowledge is equivalent to people that think EA NHL games are accurate representations of players and their abilities.

And that Newhook is a star waiting to happen and is an elite skater! I'm just piling on now. I think the group tries really hard and they do a decent job of being a casual fan's resource. I'm just not going to take their evaluation abilities and really trust it.

Yeah, problematic as PLD or Scheifele would potentially be, they gotta do SOMETHING this offseason to fix the 2C issue. This year was totally unacceptable.

I think we're setting ourselves up for disappointment again. Outside of Kadri and Toews, whose GMs were forced to make a move they didn't like, this Avs management group hasn't shown the ability to land big name NHL impact players.

PLD/Scheifele/Lindholm - All these guys are going to have bidding wars. The Avs probably won't come anywhere near obtaining any of them.

My opinion right now is that MacFarland is a p***y and the best we can hope for is the overpaid ghost of ROR. Maybe a disappointing solution like Kevin Hayes. But I doubt they get a legit 2C this summer.

Those 3 are also getting moved because it's forced upon their management. Not sure why you expect the Avs to land an impact trade vet every year.

Since the 2019 off-season, Colorado has added...
  • Burakovsky
  • Georgiev
  • Kadri
  • Kuemper
  • Lehkonen
  • Manson
  • Saad
  • Toews
...via trade, while only signing (2) multi-year deals with non-organization UFA: Bellemare ($1.8x2) and Donskoi ($3.9x4).

The Avalanche have never been able to land the trendy "name" players like Hall or Giroux, but that's hardly relevant considering the amount of insane success they've had via the trade market.

Excluding Kadri and Toews (the two I mentioned) none of those guys are near the level of players we're talking about in this thread. Especially in the center position.

I stopped taking them seriously after they said they would take Barzal over Rantanen in a 2015 redraft

It's possible they won't be able to land one of these guys but I think they are seriously going to try. Hey, maybe we get outbid again and the package from another team is more enticing, that's life I guess but I think the Avs will be involved and do their best to land one of these players.

If I had to guess, their top choice would be Lindholm. Since he's still got a year left on his contract at $4.85M, he'd give us the most flexibility for next year since that's the amount that would count against the cap as opposed to PLD which would be around $8M. Lindholm is likely going to cost that too but at least it would only start the year after.

In any case, he would have to come with an extension agreement in place for it to be worthwhile to give up the pieces they would need to give up to make this trade happen.

haha that too. Megan started slow, but she's already making the rest of them look bad. It feels like she's the only one that does research and uses critical thinking. I hope she can find an opportunity elsewhere. Jesse is probably the 2nd best.

Rudo also seems to have mellowed out a bit from his peak cringe moments.

Idk. I feel like if you’re spending a 1st+ on a C you may as as well try and get a guy with term that can fill the position for longer than a season. If we theoretically pay a 1st+Newhook for Lindholm, how likely can we afford his next contract? If we can’t afford it we’re down assets and back in the same situation at the end of next season. I may prefer to just pay extra to find a solution for the 2C spot.

Since Vegas will probably find a new toy, I would go hard for William Karlsson. He also have term for a couple of years.

Is there any universe in which MacFarland buys Landy out next summer if not healthy in order to gain cap certainty? Meh, that's probably very much against the CBA though.
