Not a chance
I wouldn't say it's impossible.

If next summer rolls around and Landy is still a complete question mark, buyout has to come into the equation. Loyalty is important but if he isn't even close, he is simply killing the team.

It sucks but if he isn't close come next summer, I'd say it's likely that his career is done and the Avs need to do what's best for the franchise. Buyout is better than retirement, I believe, and if so buyout has to become a real possibility.

Buyout means years upon years of dead cap space, our cap would be affected for 8 years with a buyout next summer. There is absolutely no way anyone is going to buy out that contract. He will either coast into retirement as an Av on LTIR with insurance probably picking up a bunch of the real dollars or he'll be traded to Arizona to add to their collection of permanently broken former NHL stars.

Is there any universe in which MacFarland buys Landy out next summer if not healthy in order to gain cap certainty? Meh, that's probably very much against the CBA though.
Isn't the contract insured? Just let him be on LTIR.

Bet365 has released its 2024 Cup Odds. They have the Avs as the odds on favorite to win.
Tough to say anything yet. I wouldn't bet on Avalanche being the favourite.. we will be good but not the best. My guess. Depending what happens in the summer.

I think with the right moves the Avs could absolutely be a favorite next year... But they have to make the right moves. Which currently I have very little fait in CMac doing so.

Exactly. Well said. After the trade deadline not so hopeful.

Having a buy out on the cap for 13+ years? Lmao not going to happen. They will just LTIR him

I wasn't sure on the best scenarios. It sounds like LTIR for as long as needed. I mean the player has to agree to this. Not sure Landy will agree to sit in LTIR for years if he will never play again. I'd think he'd just want to retire.

But between buyout and retirement which is more damaging to the team? I can't remember all the rules.

If he retires he doesn't get paid. What incentive for him is there to do that? Not get paid millions for the low low price of telling a doctor his knee hurts once a year?

LTIR counts against the cap, but with LTIR, you are allowed to exceed the cap. Landy won't retire and the Avs won't buy him out. If Landy doesn't play again (and I think we are way too early to say that), he'll end up being traded to whichever team is currently tanking and trying to get to the cap floor.

Not until the balloon portion of his contract has passed.
