Wonder if Girard to Calgary for Lindholm makes sense if Hanifin gets traded.
We don't know Conroy yet, but if we look back at Calgary and assume he agrees with how they have built over the years... doubtful. They haven't had an under 6' defensemen play more than 40 games since Kris Russell (who they didn't commit to). The longest term under 6' defensemen they have had since 2000 is Andrew Ferrance who spent 2 full seasons and 2 partial seasons with them (Russell could be debated here too).

It frankly makes a ton of sense... they need to make a lasat go with Kopi and Doughty still playing well, it solidifies any questions on their centers (IE the Byfield question), and on top of that, they can make a huge move to grab the goalie as well. Say LA gets Helly and PLD... I don't see how they don't immediately become WC favorites.
They might be a favorite, but I doubt they make it to the SCF. Solid team, but I just don't see it with the current LA team unless they get hot at the right moment, similar to St. Louis.

With PLD and Helly... they'd have top 5 goaltending, top 5 forward depth, and a defense in the 10-15 range (Clarke could push that higher if he transitioned similar to other high end defensive prospects, I personally don't think that would happen). That's about as complete of a teams as you can build within the cap. It would 100% ride on Kopi and Doughty not falling off a cliff, but provided they don't, that would be an insanely complete team.

Who is the out of nowhere 2C player the Avalanche might find out there? The move we'd never see coming versus the expected or visible options.

Random shot in the dark: Brock Nelson.

The Avalanche were briefly linked to him in the 2019 off-season, but Nelson re-signed with the Islanders (and Colorado ultimately ended up with Kadri).

Lou Lamoriello was mentioning how he has (5) centers during his season ending press conference a few days ago. I know that doesn't necessarily mean he'll move Nelson, but he'd be much easier to move and garner a significantly better return than JP Pageau. (Not to mention Pageau is a much more natural fit as a 3C).

Nelson is one of their best players, but the fact is he'll be 32 in October with only two years left on his deal. The Islanders called their shot with acquiring/extending Horvat to go along with Barzal. They could throw Barzal on the wing again and go into next year with the same exact team, but it wouldn't shock me if Nelson is dealt.

Probably a Brock Nelson?

I guess I wasn't the first person who thought of Nelson.

Another random shot in the dark, though I don't think the Flyers are looking to move him: Morgan Frost.

It says 5'11"... are we in another 5'10.9999 type situation here?

Kidding aside, not a big guy. Would be be a good 2C? I haven't seen much of him.
I'm not sure he's actually 5'11" but not worth the pages of that quagmire.

On the 2C side... maybe? Last year he actually showed a solid ability to play center. He's a good enough skater and he plays well through the middle... his compete and battle are not my favorite things, and he can get bullied a bit (so I think he needs wingers who win a lot of 1v1 battles). I think if you lighted his load defensively (more matchups than role), he's got enough offense to be a 55ish point guy while not hurting you defensively too much. I think you'd need a very good defensive 3C to support him (and MacK) on that end of the ice.

The #1 reason he is available though is arbitration. He's going to ask for ~5m (likely with the hopes of 4.5). To avoid that, you need to be willing to go to at least 4 years at high 3s/low 4s. That's quite the risk for a guy who nearly washed out and not cheap by the standards of other risky young guys (Fatty and Hayton).

I don't disagree, it'd be hard to point to a position where they'd need improvement, but IMO they don't have the franchise talent or a strong enough identity to go all the way.

I'd like to see his height debated for pages upon pages.

Again?

We are SOOOOO lucky that MacKinnon decided a long time ago to have extra skin graphed to the bottom of his feet so that he'd measure 6'0" so that he wouldn't completely BUST at the NHL level like so many of those 5'11" losers out there!!!!

pass on EJ for me. Time to move on and let this team change.
Yeah I would pass on EJ as well unless he's willing to come in at under a $1M in which case it wouldn't matter if you had him or a youngster in that #6 spot. I'd also make it clear that he'd likely play a lot less games too, to keep him fresh and to see what maybe a rookie like Malinski can do.

I think there's going to be a stupid team out to there that's going to be willing to offer EJ $3Mx2 or something crazy like that just based on reputation... happens ever year.

JMFJ I would bring back for 775K - 850k though. Same with Cogs.
