Man all the props in the world to Mason Mctavish. Goes on a grueling run to the mem cup finals and still shows up. I don't begrudge the guys that said no, though certain ones makes less sense then others(Wright) but the guys who are coming despite easily being able to say no if they wanted to go up a notch for me.

Not bad considering it’s a literal B team. Missing eligible players who would be on the team include Byfield, Perfetti, Jarvis, Neighbours, Guenther, Sillinger, Johnston, Wright, Bourque, Bourgault, Power, Drysdale, Guhle, Barron, and Clarke.

Barron wasn't eligible.

Hey look, they put Bedard first. They must feel he's the best !!!! ;)

My early stab at the lineup:

Johnson-McTavish-Stankoven
Othmann-Bedard-Greig (can play C)
Dufour-Kidney-Roy
Cuylle-Desnoyers-Foerster
Gauche, Ostapchuk

Zellweger-Sebrango
Lambos-Hunt
Cormier-O’Rourke
Thompson, Seeley

Cossa
Garand
Brochu

Not bad at all. 14 players missing. WOW!

Bourgault is coming off an injury that he was playing through during Shawinigan’s Memorial Cup run.

He played a lot of hockey this spring and early summer.

He’s turning pro this year so makes sense he’s preparing for this upcoming season. Quite a few eligible guys won’t be there this year.

Amen to that.

Feel like this coulda been a good chance for Wright to play in meaningful games and build his reputation back up after falling in the draft.
Yup. Disappointed in him / Seattle??? Not sure who deserves the blame but he should have been there.

Good catch. Here’s a lineup of who we are not fielding:

Guenther-Byfield-Perfetti
Sillinger-Wright-Jarvis
Neighbours-Johnston-Bourgault
Bourque

Power-Drysdale
Guhle-Clarke
Barron

I’m excited to watch the games, but this just makes me sad.
If we never knew about those players, we'd feel better about the team we are sending - it's pretty darn good. Yes, I agree, it's hard not to feel some level of remorse about what could have been.

Good luck to the team. I've warmed to the tournament as time gets closer. Credit to guys like McTavish and Johnson who have already played a ton of hockey this past year and who can already basically pencil in NHL roles in September. I'm glad to see Foerster, Hunt, and Thompson as well since they likely missed spots in December only due to health. Forwards and goaltenders look good, not sure about the defence without Power and Guhle but we will see.

I'm interested in seeing how the line combinations look to start out, as there are many different ways that forward group could be made up stylistically. Also looks like potentially 8 returnees for the 2023 tournament at forward, though presumably McTavish won't be back, and 2 returnees on defence.

Seems like a D group with a nice blend of talents. Zellweger and Cormier(Thompson?) can be the offensive types, with the others being more two way types with size. Goalies look promising, too. I think the coaches will have to just go with the hot hand, and not worry about which G is supposed to be better. I think any of the 3 would work, though Cossa might have the job to lose?

It seemed like Garand had the inside track at it during the original tournament but I would imagine it will be open to either Cossa or Garand again.

It's criminal imo that Brandt Clarke got left off this roster. I get he has his flaws, but if you're going to carry 8 Dman, how can you leave him off? He offers a skillset no other dman on this roster does and could of been an x factor in any given moment Hockey Canada does this every year it seems.

He’s simply the best defenseman available to us and would be arguably the best at the tournament. It’s even more stupid because he’ll surely be on the Christmas team, so why not let him get the experience and be another “returnee”?

Who could be available in December that is not playing now in summer ? Sounds like we will have the same team as now ? No?

Love to see Ostapchuk there.
I also hope we get to see Cuylle and Bedard pair up again. They had some legit chemistry together.

USA will be missing some key guys as well, but nothing approaching the depth of that list.

Any reason Fantilli is playing on neither the Hlinka or the WJC team? I assume he'll play in the 2023 WJC, but it's odd he's not on the roster for the Hlinka.

The missing goaltenders is the biggest loss for USA, which has absolutely tanked our chances IMO. I would have preferred us to lose another 5-6 starting skaters than our top keepers, because we've got plenty of depth there. But not in net - we've got 3 undrafted goalies on the roster as a result.

They did, but was it really some unique “chemistry” or Bedard simply being an elite player who elevates his linemates? I don’t think Cuylle should play higher than fourth line on this team, while Bedard should drive a line. I like him with Othmann and Greig as two big, mean, yet highly skilled guys who can retrieve the puck for Bedard, finish plays, and create their own space.
