Because they don’t have much of a choice now with these contracts. You can’t tank with Karlsson and Burns and Couture and now Hertl all under contract for big money for several years. Best you can hope for is finding and developing young talent in the process.
Can't in terms of being able to fall that far down the standings or can't in terms of feeling like you have to push to win because you have those contracts? One I can agree with as a possibility and one I disagree with. They absolutely can tank with those contracts in terms of actually ending up at the bottom of the standings.

How so? At the end of the day all four of those players are productive even if the level is not remotely close to what they earn. Are you basically insinuating loading up the rest of the roster with the Gambrells of the league?

Adin Hill and the fallout from the EK9 arbitration for a 7th, call it even?

I mean, we finished 29th out of 31 with those four in 2019-20. Why couldn't we do it again? Personally, too many things have to go right in order for them to not be exactly what they have been the past three seasons. If the team had the flexibility to improve the roster to a Blues like model that got them the Cup then I could at least respect that avenue but I don't see that being the case. The cap space we have now is likely to go into re-signing Ferraro and other RFA's plus Kane's likely grievance penalty. We're going to have a hell of a time even improving depth positions on our team. We could look like a solid enough team to compete for the last spot when everyone is healthy and at the top of their game but when Karlsson inevitably gets injured, we devolve again to utter dog shit.

That year was a complete disaster in every way. Between Martin Jones, the insane number of major injuries, the lack of younger talent expected to contribute and the major regression of the older talent that completely fell off and the even younger guys like Labanc that simply lost his game. The younger guys we have coming in now are all significantly better than the Radils and Noesens we iced back then. The only way we can actually tank to those levels is by refusing to play the guys like Bordeleau and finding a different option in nets that isn’t Hill, Reimer or Kahk.

Burns, Karlsson, and Couture are going to be worse next year than they were this year. There's no question about it. You also can't assume that Timo is going to play at the same level as he did this year. He can be great but he hasn't strung multiple great years together either. The youth that we are hoping for basically amounts to a bunch of potential 3rd liners and not much else. Eklund's the only young player that might be something more than that but he also just came off a bad development year.

This team can easily crap out next year, the only problem is that there are much worse teams somehow.

The way I see it, they have a disaster season on the horizon. The goaltending is not likely to hold up to the onslaught that this team had this past season with little flexibility to improve and uncertainty surrounding the GM position and the Kane grievance. An injury to Karlsson which is pretty good odds regardless will hurt this team like it did this past season. I don't think just playing Eklund and Bordeleau is going to keep them afloat. Their blue line is still pretty shitty and their forward lines still suck pretty hard. Better forward lines with those two inserted for sure but still on the losing end.

All it really takes is two major injuries to any two of Hertl, Burns, Meier, Karlsson, and Couture and it's downhill very quickly. Two major injuries to your most played players is pretty normal.

Karlsson getting injured is basically the free center square of the Bingo card, so make it one more injury

Listen, I ain't placing any stanley cup bets on them, I'm just merely stating there's too much talent for this team to be able to tank properly. Sure, injuries can happen and dramatically derail a season, but that really applies to everyone. Look at Las Vegas.

Not only that, but a little less acceleration, and a little less power and accuracy on his passing and shooting, and Karlsson goes from being a fragile but offensively dynamic player to being a liability who doesn't generate enough offense to even approach his cap hit. Remember two seasons ago - outside of a five-week period of legitimate excellence, Karlsson was just awful, and that's without really being hurt much.

Burns is honestly in the same boat - at his age, he should be slowing down every year, losing a little more power and accuracy on his shot and his passing, tiring out a little more quickly, and those things can add up quickly. He's not exactly a defensive wizard and has to rely on his offensive generation, and I honestly think that's somewhat in question already - he picks up points, but I don't think he's really tilting the ice as much as those points indicate, and he's giving a lot back on his weak blue line performance (odd man rushes, puck fumbles, plus his notorious lazy icings).

Couture could see the same declines, and Bonino. Vlasic is bad now and could go right to unplayable on a bad team quality very soon (he's already not far from it, if not actually there). Reimer could regress to backup quality. All of this is without considering the possibility of injuries.

This team, as constructed right now, could easily be Montreal-bad; all it'll take is some injuries, some age-related decline, and some young guys either not developing as quickly as we hope or turning out to be flashes in the pan. Some of all of that absolutely is going to happen.

I get that. I'm not saying that you're saying they're a contender or anything. I'm just saying that they were extremely lucky to finish in the standings as high as they did. Reimer on his own pretty much stole 11-15 points for the team that would've put them in the top 5 in a season where Karlsson was the only one with a major injury. I can't expect Reimer to play that way again and I can't expect only Karlsson again to have a major injury. In an off-season where they probably won't make a significant amount of roster moves, I can't expect the team in front of the goaltending to improve enough to balance out the likely return to normal performance levels by them. I'm also just not sold on a couple of smaller rookies to play consistently well enough over the long haul to make them any better. Those two will likely hit that wall in their rookie year similar to how Dahlen did. Not as bad as him mind you but often rookies run on fumes the second half of their first year because they don't know what it takes yet.

Karlsson was playing through a torn groin. I generally agree with you but he was very hurt and that's why he's where he's at now.

Of course you can. Apart from Hertl all of those guys suck.

They don't suck. They are overpaid (in Karlsson's case extremely overpaid), but they aren't horrible players. However without getting rid of them we will be better than Seattle, Arizona and Montreal. Probably a few others too. It makes getting the top players in the draft much less likely.

Where the Sharks are, I don't think they'll participate in goalie market.
Doubt they dangle too much in blue line land.
Can think they might look for some veteran depth/leadership.

The Sharks were 29/32 in attendance last year. Coupled with a bad TV contract means Hasso is losing money. A full rebuild means more of the same for 3 years with no guarantee of success.

Most of the recent Cup winners (Tampa, Pittsburgh, Colorado?) go with a very high, up-tempo style of play with an aggressive transition game. It is fan-friendly and fun to watch, but you can get blown-out in a hurry.

My guess is the Sharks are re-tooling in this direction in the draft. Seems that way with DWjr picks.

So maybe we're in a stealth-tank by default because we don't have the roster to win it anyway.

So does anyone think Boughner is an up-tempo coach? It seems the players respect/like him, which means a lot and so I think he stays another year.

The future of the team is definitely geared towards being an up-tempo transition team. The only three guys that could really play that style on the team now are Karlsson, Burns, and Meier. Burns I say because he's still a good skater despite his age and is still a great stickhandler.

I just want the sharks to target someone undervalued. Dont need a big name, but make offers on Marchament, Niederreiter or Mikheyev and see what happens.

IIRC, the Sharks showed interest in Marchment way back when, and given their tendency to lock in on guys,,,

I think we need to start worrying about hasso. What's his succession plan?

He's why they aren't tanking, I think he wants that cup before he's gone but he's no spring chicken which is why they won't tank and why DW went after karl. Maybe Larry wants the team?
