From what it sounds like, Fitz was not outbid today for Gaudreau. From what we've seen.

Like at least one other person said, this is one of the most bizarre UFA signings ever.

I don't know how you get him for under 5. I would be floored. But I felt like Burakovsky was going to do better than 5.5. I could be overestimating how much teams will love him though (maybe he is too and that is why he's available).
We screwed up not getting him

I can't understand why somebody would wanna sign there over almost any of the rumored destinations. MAYBE I'd understand wanting to sign there over the Islanders, with their current state of the team and all the old fossils over there.

I can't understand wanting to sign there over us or Calgary. I just can't.

He probably loses a lot of money in taxes to Canada, so maybe that money while living/playing in Canada is less than that money living/playing in America, but I'm no expert on that.

It's really bizarre.

Don’t have any interest in any of the remaining guys. I really thought Fitz was going to get Fiala. Now with no JG and all the other top guys scooped up, I say just no knee jerk moves. They aren’t getting a Laine or Tkachuk or Meier.

Just ride the course, hope the goaltending and power play is better and Alex Holtz and Fabian Zetterlund can contribute next year.

I don't think he wanted to join a rival of the flyers. seems like fitz made a very good offer
It strikes me as insane if that played into his thinking given he's a professional athlete with 8 years of experience, but oh well. I am more likely to buy organizational concerns. For whatever reason Columbus was the right fit for him at less money...moving on...

Palat doesn't really have any standout skills, other than being on Tampa Bay the past decade. He's a middle six forward in a market oversaturated with middle 6 forwards. He'll get around 5M.
Yes , he is surrounded by world class talent and put up shit numbers.
He is a “good” player but does nothing for us at the cost and term he will want.
We have 38382923 “good” prospects but lack one elite stud winger . Save the cap $ and wait for the winger version of the Toews trade to come along . Don’t overpay for a mediocre player.

I wonder why no one is questioning the Isles org since he clearly turned something down there too that couldn't have been far off what he ended up getting.
