DeBrincat is 24. He’s essentially Nico’s age. They’re looking at guys like Chychrun on defense, who’s also 24. It’s not foolishly taking a win now approach. It’s just acquiring good proven NHL players that fit their timeline.

I don’t think I would do the DeBrincat move for 2nd overall given the contract status. But again, we’re going to sit on our hands and pick another 18 year old who will maybe have an impact in 3 or 4 years. I’m not so sure Ottawa has the wrong idea here.
They're also beating their head against the Tampa-Florida-Toronto wall. I'm not even counting Boston but they're always good too, until they aren't. Our division doesn't even have those kind of juggernauts to contend with at the moment, just the paper tiger Canes and the Rangers.

"You get to play with Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, and Shane Wright/Slafkovsky." That's a huge part of the sales pitch.

Who is Johnny going to play with in Philly? Travis Konecny and JVR? If he's going to PHI he's going to be THE guy with all the pressure and expectations that come from that. I don't know if I'd want to leave the toxic Canadian media just to end up in a hostile fanbase who has no other hope but to constantly dissect every play you make under a microscope.

But they don’t have to win this year. They could have DeBrincat tear it up for another 8 years. That’s the entire point of acquiring a star who’s under 25 years old. He has so much runway to build with that group.

DeBrincat has two years of team control remaining and did not agree to an extension as part of the trade. The #7 pick almost certainly would not have played for Ottawa next year, and probably not the following year either. by the time 7 OA is contributing DeBrincat would be a UFA and might be approaching 30.

This is a win now deal.

Don’t forget 1C Kevin Hayes and his 31 points in 48 games

Using a high 1st round pick while rebuilding is somewhat foolish.
I guess I can see them thinking they are closer to contemding for a playoff spot than others think or there’s no point blowing a 1sr rounder

IF he re-signs there. They took a bit of a risk trading a first-rounder for a guy two years away from FA and Ottawa's not exactly a prime destination that talks you into signing early. That's a risk teams like say, Toronto and Florida should be taking because they're actually closer to winning and have other incentives for players to go there.

There is so much fear on this board it is comical. People scared of the cap. Scared of the age of players scared of missing out on a prospect they are willing to pass on a proven nhl top line talent. It’s just really weird.

Also not like Ottawa is a premier destination to want to sign long term for.

DeBrincat is 24, how is he going to be approaching 30 in two seasons? The contract status is certainly a risk, but with a winning team and extended negotiating runway, Ottawa is in a great position to lock him up long term.

A true win now deal is acquiring someone like Gaudreau or JT Miller. This isn’t it.

It's not weird if you understand how free agency works. If he was locked down for 8 years like Hughes is sure, but he's not. Some of you have clearly only finished a single season of Franchise mode in NHL '22 and use that expertise to make your judgments.

Huh, Tweet got deleted but Slafkovsky was met with both cheers and boo's when walking the red carpet that the Habs have set up.

I think fans of a team that had Sharangovich and Mercer playing wing on the top line last year are focusing too much on position. Lots of guys drafted as centers end up on the wing. If we end up with Wright, just start him at 3C and if he's ready for a top6 spot we will get him there somehow.
What do you do with Hischier then? You have McLeod at 4C.

There's a difference between not caring about the consequences of overpaying guys, trading draft picks and the like in quixotic moves and acting like there's no actual risk at all in doing such things. I could understand the former, but the latter is just sticking your head in the sand.

What's ironic to me is JrFischer is one of the biggest Lou critics by far here - what did people here criticize Lou for most, reckless win-now moves when the team was clearly not in position to win now.
