Shifting Slaf to the middle would be a very Bergevin Habs thing to happen. Don't really think this crew does that. I do think there is some merit to trying him out in the middle. He seems at his best when he's the driving force and the one carrying the puck in space. That's suited to the middle. I remember Jack Han and David St Louis talking about this. Whether or not he'd actually be able to stick as a good center is another question though
Absolutely. I think, if you believe he has the skillset to do it, and you have a need there, you give him the chance to show he can't with the fallback of having a possession driving winger. Just trying to put some reasoning on why, other than upside, Montreal might go with Slaf.

isn't your point that ownership doesn't want to pay people money? what does it matter how we go about getting our assets, if ownership still has to pay big bucks?

Also took on a guy who was a question mark in PK who had 3 years left at 9 mil

So you think the owners - with like fifty-seven teams they own all of or a piece of - are sitting there the week before the NHL draft pick and lecturing Fitz on the value of a #2 overall pick montetarily?
Apollo Global does exactly this kind of thing...

You said something really smart before, how if NJ is a front runner to get Gaudreau with no assets moved away, why offer the moon for DeBrincat considering the huge amount needed to be sent out in return.

I think this is a gamble worth rolling the dice on. Worst case scenario, at least you don't lose anything. Also, as much as I like DeBrincat, there's no doubt in my mind Gaudreau is the better player right now.
Considering the Flyers still exist and are Johnny Hockey's boyhood team (a la Taveres with Toronto) I wouldn't consider us a frontrunner by any stretch. Calgary as long as they can offer the extra year and the Flyers are the co-favorites imo and everyone else a distant third.

You guys should all be laughing at Chicago for this one.

They don't make this trade without specifically targeting someone with the #7 pick. Last year they traded their own #6 overall 2022 pick to CLB along with #12 overall 2021 (Sillinger) and Boqvist for Seth Jones.

We're obviously one of the frontrunners. Toronto was a team on the rise when Tavares went there. Philly's a team out in no mans land. Maybe he still goes there out of a desire to be a Flyer but it's not the same.

They also just hired Torts (which may be a turnoff admittedly for a guy like him) and are clearly in win-now mode, whatever we may think of the merits of that position.

Gorton loves wingers in the draft (Andersson, Kakko, Laffy). Follow the tea leaves folks.
When did they pass on a higher rated prospect for Kakko or Laffy? They drafted them cause that's where the lottery and board led them, not because they passed on better players believing you build from the wing out. Lafreniere was the consensus #1OA, Kakko the consensus #2 after Hughes. Lias Andersson was a strange pick but it's not like there were a lot of sure things picked after him either.

I think fans of a team that had Sharangovich and Mercer playing wing on the top line last year are focusing too much on position. Lots of guys drafted as centers end up on the wing. If we end up with Wright, just start him at 3C and if he's ready for a top6 spot we will get him there somehow.
This.

If the Habs shock everyone and take Slaf, I better hear "With the 2nd pick in the NHL Draft, the NJ Devils are proud to select Shane Wright" or i'll be pissed.

Interesting to see the pro Johnny talk on here because I know the Day after Johnny signs elsewhere this place……

“ that’s way too much glad we didn’t sign him”

“That contract won’t age well”

“He’s too small”

I would think Johnny could see that Philly is circling the drain. Not that we’re some dream destination, but we have much more promise.
Players don't obsess over prospect lists like fans. They care about contracts and/or going to an organization that wants to win. Prospect lists are a distant third at best and that's not even accounting for location.

I mean the Rangers were as bad off as anyone when Bobby Holik went there but, hey they gave him a DVD presentation of the bright lights.

Speaking of teams foolishly talking themselves into win-now approaches

DeBrincat is 24. He’s essentially Nico’s age. They’re looking at guys like Chychrun on defense, who’s also 24. It’s not foolishly taking a win now approach. It’s just acquiring good proven NHL players that fit their timeline.

I don’t think I would do the DeBrincat move for 2nd overall given the contract status. But again, we’re going to sit on our hands and pick another 18 year old who will maybe have an impact in 3 or 4 years. I’m not so sure Ottawa has the wrong idea here.

I think their actual roster is absolutely putrid. I don’t even think they should go after him

I agree but with a player that was expecting to go 1st overall ,was granted exceptional status to play in the CHL before he got hair on his nuts …He might be a tad pissed about playing on the wing? Not saying it’s likely but might be a possibility vs. a kid that is just happy to make a NHl team and is fine playing anywhere?
Or if he’s used as a 3C . Same thing. But I can’t see him being a 3c after a few years , would probably be on the right side of Hughes or Nico.
