It's not a red flag. They might just think Slaf is more likely to hit his ceiling or has a higher ceiling. He's also not a franchise center. I think the issue here is that you're thinking that's the type of expectation that is set and if they passed on that type of player it'd be crazy and poses a red flag. Wright had a very similar DY to Nico. He's probably that level of prospect. Getting another Nico out of this draft would be great.

Also, I don't think people realize that Habs have a lot of needs and their wingers sans Caufield are looking bleak based on their rebuild window likely needing couple seasons. Gallagher looks like he might be in a decline here quickly as the injuries pile up last couple yrs.

Would of liked to attend the draft in person as I live in Montreal, but the prices were absurd.

I toyed with the idea of going but getting into the building seemed like it would be a struggle.

Maybe check if there are cheap tickets tomorrow. Day 2 can be better for photo/autograph opportunities.

And yeah if the Devils stayed at #5 before the lottery I could have still seen them doing the Senators' deal despite the uncertainty around Debrincat after next year. At some point you have to take a risk. People act like Sakic did nothing but wait for picks to play ten years stright, he made big trades too - trading for and then trading out Duchene, Devon Toews, etc.

The thing with Slafkovsky is whether or not a team believes he can play center. If the Canadiens believe he can, then the whole "passing on Wright for a winger" thing has less legs. As soon as draftniks heard that Gauthier was going back to C for Boston College, his stock jumped. Could be the same case for Slafkovsky. He's got the skillset to do it.

Holtz's upside is pretty much a DeBrincat-type player. They're both pure finishers with good but not great all-around games as RWs.

I agree. In a vacuum you'd rather have the 24 year old sure thing though. When you include the other factors like Debrincat being a year away from a 9 mil QO and 2 years from UFA (and Gaudreau out there as an option) I completely get why we pass on that.

What channel is this on? And please don't tell me ESPN+ which I cancelled months ago when the Devils didn't have anymore games on there.

If Slaf goes first and we talk ourselves out of Wright in some Draft Day the movie type situation I'd be pretty furious. Take the bpa.
No I absolutely would pick Wright if they kept the pick...but I wouldn't be 100% surprised if they tried to trade out of the pick. I'd be more concerned about taking five cents on the dollar trading out than I would them straight passing on him per se.

Question that is unrelated to the Devils!

The Habs GM said he wants to make a splash in the 1st round so I'm guessing that means a pick in the 10-15th range. What team do you guys think would the Habs Gm would target for their pick?

I don't think they'd be willing to give up what is needed for the Blue Jackets 12th OA, Perhaps the Jets 14th OA pick for 26th OA + 32OA or 62OA?

You said something really smart before, how if NJ is a front runner to get Gaudreau with no assets moved away, why offer the moon for DeBrincat considering the huge amount needed to be sent out in return.

I think this is a gamble worth rolling the dice on. Worst case scenario, at least you don't lose anything. Also, as much as I like DeBrincat, there's no doubt in my mind Gaudreau is the better player right now.

Shifting Slaf to the middle would be a very Bergevin Habs thing to happen. Don't really think this crew does that. I do think there is some merit to trying him out in the middle. He seems at his best when he's the driving force and the one carrying the puck in space. That's suited to the middle. I remember Jack Han and David St Louis talking about this. Whether or not he'd actually be able to stick as a good center is another question though

Wright, Hughes, Mercer line. Problem solved.

I've brought up a Wright-Hischier-Mercer line. Good luck finding a smarter two way line than that.

This. Habs take Wright or Cooley unless they believe they can use/ convert Slaf into a C

what does that have to do with what I said? Please explain?
So you think the owners - with like fifty-seven teams they own all of or a piece of - are sitting there the week before the NHL draft lecturing Fitz on the value of a #2 overall pick monetarily? Spending money is still spending money, it's no difference to Harris or Blitzer if they're spending it on a UFA or spending it on a guy that was traded for.
