No red flag as far as I'm concerned. Remember, this is Gorton pulling the strings. The same guy who drafted two busts in Kakko and Laf.
They are overthinking it.
Well Hughes is the GM...which is another thing to consider, a first-time GM having the nuts to make the Slaf pick over Wright?

I think Wright is actually perfect on Jack's wing as a trigger man and he could take faceoffs and cover some defensive responsibility... Talking myself into all options

I've said the same thing in the past. His game this year was based on a lot of short passes and give and gos where he wasn't the primary puck carrier. That fits in super well next to Jack. He'd be a really good goal scoring two way wing.

If Ottawa won the draft lottery over us I honestly think we'd be the ones making this trade.

Ottawa opening day has Chabot (25) Batherson (24) Tkachuk, Norris (23) Stutzle, Sanderson, and top prospect Greig (20) and Pinto (21).
Now add Debrincat (24) vs 7th overall who would likely be 2 years behind all these guys.

We will have Bratt (24), Nico (23), Hughes (21), Mercer and Holtz (20), top prospect Luke Hughes still a year off (19). Dougie is an outlier but he fell into our laps. Our core is a little younger and less developed but I think our supporting cast is much better. 2nd overall could likely hop straight into the NHL and be ahead of or in line with Luke Hughes. While a later pick could be a little behind the timeline and we'd be better off with a better fit in DeBrincat
Plus... Sharangovich, Siegenthaler with Gritsyuk and Mukhamadullin/Okhotyuk on the way. We can likely add Slafkovsky or Wright to the list in a few hours. A possible top end player with the #37 pick can join the list. Things are looking bright, thank the stars Fitzgerald didn't overpay for DeBrincat.

Lol an undersized forward. He scored 40 goals a year. That is insane talk
Devils definitely need to be smart with what they commit the rest of their forward money to considering Hughes, Hischier, and Bratt will likely be taking 22 million of the cap. Someone like DeBrincat taking up another 9 million is a lot of cap into smaller forwards and less money you can spend on guys to compliment them.

It’s definitely something the Devils need to be weary of. They get tossed around enough as it is against bigger opponents.

Tbf the price for Cat was far from an overpay.

That would be the second or third worst-case scenario other than going completely off the board or a trade down. I wouldn't have minded staying at #5 and trading the pick for immediate help. I'm okay with drafting Slaf at #2 but getting yet another center after Montreal of all teams passes on him would make me roll my eyes a little.
Yeah, this is silly.

I think Wright is the safest pick in the top echelon and maybe 1st round prospect pool. I would be very excited to have him with Devils.

Having three real solid centers is a pretty good foundation for success. A lot of teams have depth/versatility at C spot as it gives coaches ability to play "multiple" with their line combos and specials (PK/PP). Pens/Hawks went on their Cup runs being very very deep and having some fungible differences in skill at C.

Fans sometimes do get a little too caught up in the peg/hole theory and undersell depth and versatility, particularly relative to the positional value in NHL. There's a lot of wings every year to play with in FA/trade. Not so much C.

I love the idea of having Jack and Nico as the top 2Cs and then Mercer and Wright who you can mix and match as a top 6 wing and 3C. Also if one of the top 2 go down you still are able to run out a tremendous 1-2-3

People will be complaining there isn't enough minutes for Wright, just like they want to move Mercer off center after half his rookie season just because he's 'too good to be the #3C'.

Staal played 19 minutes a game as the "3C".

No but the rumored deals for him from the Devils were -- #2 overall + 2023 1st + Holtz? I mean, that stuff was ridiculous.

Well sure but it's obvious that was never actually the case.

Yeah Holtz, our second and a third would have been pretty close to what the Hawks took but odds are they wanted a top ten pick over Holtz, or a pick this year over a first rounder next year.

Y’all want this big move but the team doesn’t need it. Draft at #2, get a goalie. Look for some wingers with size for the top 9.
With you. I'd love to take a run at Gaudreau, but I wouldn't go to some of the crazy high-end numbers I'm seeing.

Build with the young pieces we have and if it comes to it, chase the big FA when it puts you over the top, not just on the map.

These guys haven’t been wrong about #1OA and have Wright going first.

Well that's a good sign at least.

BTW, you had Bratt being traded to Ottawa for the 7th pick.

I have to ask : Why do you hate Bratt so much to ship him out to the proverbial "middle of nowhere"?

Holtz's upside is pretty much a DeBrincat-type player. They're both pure finishers with good but not great all-around games as RWs.

Tarasenko???? For 2OA??? A goalie for 2OA???? Is it Igor coming back???

chill, they would obviously have to add. i’m just saying (for the last time) that i think other players are still in play, and that depending on who the habs take, #2 could still be in play. good lord
