Lack of team control definitely significantly diminished the return for DeBrincat, not surprising we weren't dangling #2 if he won't discuss an extension.

Agreed, if he overtly refused to discuss an extension is changes the calculus on the trade at 2nd overall. Still a good shot that Ottawa is in prime position to extend him with cap space and they know that.

Problem is analytics types value Pick#2 a lot more than Pick 7. If the Devils had 5-6 I think they would have done it. For example, look at Dom from the Athletc's model. Picks 2 and 7 have a large difference in value.

Holtz probably works as a sub for 7. 7OA in a stronger draft 2 years ago coming off a PPG 19/20 year old AHL year

That doesn’t seem to make sense for either team nor Debrincat. All parties should have wanted some discussion unless Chicago thinks Debrincat is going to be firm about wanting something short to take him right to UFA.
Blackhawks might wind up with DeBrincat back in town for he 2023-24 season.

That explains a lot

#2 pick is worth 727 points according to some internet draft pick value charts.

#7 is worth 419 & #39 is worth 97

NJ would have been paying a lot more to get him than Ottawa paid.
I didn't realize there were NFL-like charts out there but that makes sense.

On the bright side now we can look forward to the pick. To me Debrincat was the only guy who was realistically available that I’d trade #2 for.

Agreed, there’s nobody left to move that pick for now. In Fitz’s press conference it sounded like moving down was an option though, so wouldn’t be shocked if we don’t make the pick at 2.

As long as it's not moving down for Cutter or Kasper and it's for one of the top 5 guys or we decide to grab Nazar I'm cool with it. If it's moving down for Cutter or Kasper as the main draw then Fitz can f*** off and all my faith is gone

This really shows how bad a lot of posters here are at valuing players that are only a year or so away from UFA. Some posters here actually thought the Devils would have to add to 2OA to get DeBrincat - LOL

Which is why I'm also categorically against signing the soon to be 29 years old Gaudreau to a long term deal. That's just bad allocation of your cap for a player heading for the downhill of his career.

the pick is still in play if montreal takes slaf. we could get a serious haul
It would be a haul of picks though....it'd have to be a lot to be worth it and even then it wouldn't exactly help us in the near-term. If you wanted something to help in the near term DeBrincat was the only one even worth discussing #2 over but that shouldn't have been on the table once an extension was off it.

I have no interest in moving down a few spots and picking up a 2nd rounder or something. If those are the deals on the table, just pick Wright or Cooley at 2.

I would prefer moving the pick outright for someone who can help immediately, but who knows whats available.

Same. Zero interest in trading down for lesser prospects. We need to draft the player with THE HIGHEST ceiling / talent possible . Not multiple ones with lesser talent. We have enough of those types of prospects already.

Fitz better have deals on the table if so. Draft clock is only like 6-7 minutes long.

i’m sure there are contingency plans in place with GM’s who want wright.

i wouldn’t want just picks back either, but you don’t think any more players will be traded today? just debrincat?

I don't really know what other big name would be on the move. Friedge shut down the Tkachuk stuff

Thachuk's not getting dealt today...who else is conceivably on the market that's even worth discussing #2 over and don't say JT Miller.

lol picking up a 2nd rounder? who said that? i don’t want that either, the return would obviously have to be more than that. my point was only that the pick will be in play if montreal nabs slaf
