Yeah I would've done that trade with the Devils picks subbed in, but it is what it is. Worst part is if he didn't go to Philly which would've ended any chance Gaudreau going there and would've made us a prime suitor. Worse case scenario, ngl.

Maybe if Chicago had competent management that would have been the asking price...HF might actually be smarter than they are lol
If I remember correctly you were slightly disappointed that we moved up because the Devils would have been more likely to trade 5-6. Youy may be right. I think they might have pulled the trigger on that trade if they were 5-6.

#2 is a different planet than #7 though...what would have been the equivalent, Holtz, our #2 and #3? I would have been fine with that. A lottery unprotected #1 next year along with the #2 and #3? Eh, you'd have to do that but I don't have enough confidence in our management it won't be another f***ing lottery pick.

Maybe DeBrincat really wasn't signing any extension and that brought his value down. In which case missing out on him wouldn't be so bad. If he does re-sign in Ottawa though, then it looks bad we weren't more involved.

2 straight up should have been enough. 2 and 39 at most.

My guess is Debrincat pending free agency in the horizon or they didn’t want to part with 2 and tried to make it work around holtz plus plus

You're correct and I'd kinda still feel that way except I like Slaf a bit more now (assuming he's the guy we pick, not really in love with the other options but they could be good too). But yeah part of me was meh about winning the lottery for that very reason.

I'd still go that route if possible. He's be a big add for the next few years. He just turned 29.

Again, look at any of those giant free agent contracts. Tavares, Parise, etc. Every team winds up regretting them after a couple of years. Time is undefeated when you’re on the wrong side of 30, especially for forwards with a huge cap hit.

My guess is Fitz wants Slafkovsky in a massive way and would not risk loosing that for (possibly only )two years of Debrincat.
If we only knew WTF the Habs are doing , maybe Fitz would have traded #2 for Debrincat if he knew Slafkovsky is gone. Or swap Slafkovsky for whoever the prefer

I think Gaudreau is an exception. Like how P Kane is. Producing well into his 30’s .

If Chicago wants someone who can be as good as Debrincat is one day then Nazar is the guy.
