lol so now we can't keep players past age 24. wow! hot take!
Who is saying that? I’m just responding to your totally unfounded assertion he isn’t even in his prime.

You’re someone that doesn’t understand the value of an ELC or managing the salary cap, why am I even responding?

Only on HFBoards Fiala and Debrincat deals are considered "cheap". I'm a bit surprised about HFBoards' reaction to this deal.

In reality, those picks are super important as they are the only way to get impact players on very low contracts. Debrincat and Fiala have like 4-5 years of their primes left and will have very high contracts for remainder of their primes.

Yes - but there's no guarantee either of those players will develop. Even optimistically, they're probably 2 years out from being in NHL. Missing in drafts up high kills rebuilds into decade long projects.

This x1000. Posters here thought we would have to add Holtz to 2OA for DeBrincat. I have said before HF UNDERvalues high picks (top 6 or so) and overvalues picks after that.

I actually feel bad for DeBrincat. Rumors flying everywhere that you could be going to NJ, clearly a team on the rise.

And instead, you get traded... to f***ing Ottawa, the clownshoes stepchild franchise of eastern Canada.
Ottawa isn't a joke team, though.

Stutzle, Batherson, Chabot, Pinto, Tkachuk, Debrincat and Sanderson is a very solid group.

I don't think Ottawa is too far from us tbh.

Batherson, Stutzle, Tkachuk, Norris, Chabot, are a promising young group. Sanderson, Pinto, Greig, and some other solid prospects as well

No, it’s just wishing we would make a move at some point to improve the team. I’m all for patience and the process, but has Fitz ever moved a single high pick or prospect for anything?
How often is this move the right move? I’m not certain it would’ve been in this case. This will be interesting to revisit in a year or two.

you said he probably past his peak. so why give out a long term high dollar contract for a player that past his peak at age 24?

If you don't hit your picks, you can't build a contender. You can't trade/UFA your way into contending if you're bad at drafting. You'll then perpetually rebuild rebuilds.

Also players picks in top 3 usually make impact much earlier than 2 years and even if it takes 2 years, 2 years will pass anyway and having a 20 year old very good/star/franchise player on ELC is great.

Just picks. We should have been all over this

#2 is a different planet than #7 though...what would have been the equivalent, Holtz, our #2 and #3? I would have been fine with that. A lottery unprotected #1 next year along with the #2 and #3? Eh, you'd have to do that but I don't have enough confidence in our management it won't be another f***ing lottery pick.

Maybe DeBrincat really wasn't signing any extension and that brought his value down. In which case missing out on him wouldn't be so bad. If he does re-sign in Ottawa though, then it looks bad we weren't more involved.
