If Ottawa won the draft lottery over us I honestly think we'd be the ones making this trade.

Ottawa opening day has Chabot (25) Batherson (24) Tkachuk, Norris (23) Stutzle, Sanderson, and top prospect Greig (20) and Pinto (21).
Now add Debrincat (24) vs 7th overall who would likely be 2 years behind all these guys.

We will have Bratt (24), Nico (23), Hughes (21), Mercer and Holtz (20), top prospect Luke Hughes still a year off (19). Dougie is an outlier but he fell into our laps. Our core is a little younger and less developed but I think our supporting cast is much better. 2nd overall could likely hop straight into the NHL and be ahead of or in line with Luke Hughes. While a later pick could be a little behind the timeline and we'd be better off with a better fit in DeBrincat

I’m thinking Montreal is going to draft slafkovsky and I would be very happy drafting Shane Wright. Plus he is a righty so if he can play wing when we need to stack a line would be nice. I’m also not opposed to nemec or jiricek but obviously everyone is hoping for slafkovsky. I’m also just so happy that it looks like we will be picking and not trading it away

So, what I can tell from in here is that:

Debrincat is too small and expensive
Gaudreau is too old, small and expensive
Wright is too young and too center
Slav is too young

Angry if we make the pick
Angry if we trade the pick
Angry if we sign someone
Angry if we don’t

Years of losing are making us crazy
Different people have different opinions. Correct, want a Nobel Prize?

Welp we still have some options but Fiala and DeBrincat either would have been awesome

That would be the second or third worst-case scenario other than going completely off the board or a trade down. I wouldn't have minded staying at #5 and trading the pick for immediate help. I'm okay with drafting Slaf at #2 but getting yet another center after Montreal of all teams passes on him would make me roll my eyes a little.

if Debrincat refused to discuss an extension as part of the trade, I am glad they did not move #2 for him then.
Yeah, that definitely changes my view on this. I was assuming they would have the framework of an extension in place at least.
Fitz better have deals on the table if so. Draft clock is only like 6-7 minutes long.
They talk to teams for weeks about different scenarios and work out the agreements ahead of time. I'm sure he has a list of who to call and confirm what they want to do depending on who goes 1st.

People are severly underselling Wright but this kid will at the very worst be a 2C in this league. He is about as safe a pick as it gets. Devils would roll three lines with the best center depth in the entire NHL and add complimentary wingers through draft and free agency.
It would be a different non-traditional way of contending.

Saying getting Wright is one of the worst cases is just nonsense.

I mean Wright to Montreal was the most no-brainer of all no-brainers. A Canadian boy, who they always want. A franchise center who they desperately need, and the consensus #1 which means they can't be called on the carpet for it by the media. If THEY pass on all that to draft a winger - as much as I like Slaf myself - and open themselves up to all sorts of second-guessing, that's a bit of a red flag for me.

It's not a red flag. They might just think Slaf is more likely to hit his ceiling or has a higher ceiling. He's also not a franchise center. I think the issue here is that you're thinking that's the type of expectation that is set and if they passed on that type of player it'd be crazy and poses a red flag. Wright had a very similar DY to Nico. He's probably that level of prospect. Getting another Nico out of this draft would be great.
