So glad we are going to draft Kakko 2.0 instead of trading for a sure thing 24 year old 40 goal scorer!!!!
Remember when San Jose traded the bunch of futures for 28 years old Norris level sure thing?

Two ways to look at it...

Be upset that we didn't give up the seemingly underwhelming assets to acquire Debrincat but still have the options to use the pick and also improve the team

or

Be happy you're not the team who just moved the 24 year old two time 40 goal scorer for seemingly underwhelming assets.

I'm the latter.

There's a difference between not caring about the consequences of overpaying guys, trading draft picks and the like in quixotic moves and acting like there's no actual risk at all in doing such things. I could understand the former, but the latter is just sticking your head in the sand.

What's ironic to me is JrFischer is one of the biggest Lou critics by far here - what did people here criticize Lou for most, reckless win-now moves when the team was clearly not in position to win now.
Yeah I mean I don’t know why I couldn’t get behind the solid moves of ponakosky the second time. Brunner Steve Sullivan havlat or that gem clowe lol. I wish I was posting back then

Yeah the Hawks made out the worst in all this for sure. Kyle Davidson's first trade isn't instilling much confidence in the fanbase thats for sure

I’m a Slafkovsky fan, but those acting like it’s a slam dunk pick at #2 are out to lunch. There is massive risk with that pick. I’m praying he can turn into Kopitar, but I’ll be the first to admit that it’s a gamble.
To be fair, in the last few years, McDavid, Eichel, and Matthews were slam dunk sure things. Just about every other player in every draft has had at least some questions. I recall Marner being somewhat questioned as smaller and not a great skater. Strome was slow. Laine was criticized a bit. Of course, NJ got a 3C in 2017, but even he had unseated Patrick. Hughes was questioned enough that some folks thought Kaki was a comparable player. Dahlin was not seen as a slam dunk number one defender and his defense is still apparently questioned. Power was seen as safe because he was big but relatively modest upside. I just think that's the nature of 17-18 year olds.

It's always a f***ing gamble lol. Busts happen everyday b. But you guys thinking that's a gamble and hedging your bets on re-signing Debrincat after 2 years like it's a guarantee is ridiculous. And there are a MULTITUDE of reasons why the latter can go awry,

I'm not sure we are getting a good player. I think Slaf has high bust risk.
You're right that whoever we draft, may bust.

However trading those picks for 24 y. o. star albeit not franchise players isn't a viable strategy because you'll run yourself into salary cap problems before becoming a real contender. And also, even if you became a contender, your window would be significantly shorter if you traded 18 year olds for 24 year olds but I believe it requires no explanation.

wasn't directed at you, but curious to find your post lol

If it's actually a legitimate question then I don't think there's reason to believe that they are cheapskates. Not going out and blowing all of our cap space while being a bad team was the right move.

Welp.... Nobody is forcing you to watch, you know? :dunno:

I don't think we'll be rebuilding for another 10 years.

If the Devils had any semblance of Goaltending last season, they'd be a bubble team that could have snuck into the playoffs.

If that is fixed, things will be looking up.
I'll believe it when I see it. Every team near us could say the same exact thing. "IF we only had this or that, we'd be a bubble playoff team". We flat out suck right now.

Slafkovsky’s pre draft production makes it way more of a gamble. Everyone salivates at the size, the skating and the highlight reel goals without focusing on the fact that his production was mediocre. It will be the lowest NHL equivalency for a top 2 pick in years if he goes top 2. So no, it’s not your standard risk.

Remember that this was the same issue with Zacha. Could Slafkovsky hit big? Absolutely. But this isn’t your run of the mill non-McDavid top 2 pick. It’s risky and people should acknowledge that.

And again, this is coming from someone who is a big fan of Slafkovsky. So I’m not being unfair to the kid because I don’t like him.

Considering the Flyers still exist and are Johnny Hockey's boyhood team (a la Taveres with Toronto) I wouldn't consider us a frontrunner by any stretch. Calgary as long as they can offer the extra year and the Flyers are the co-favorites imo and everyone else a distant third.
Tortorella has to hurt Philly's chances at landing Gaudreau. Not having a bona fide playmaking center (Devils have two) can't help either.

They can re-sign Debrincat in six days

The short answer for me is that the owners aren't inherently anything. they are surrounded daily by money and numbers guys. I doubt they speak with Fitz that often. Sure, they have to ok big deals but even then, Fitz probably reports to an intermediary first. The money numbers guys try to reduce everything to a metric and don't give a rats ass about anything but trying to shave a nickel off the balance sheet so they can justify their huge salaries to Harris and Blitzer. My guess is that Harris and Blitzer don't pay close attention to any one team or sport or non-sport business. They probably have some algorithm program that shows them their net worth at any given moment but as long as that isn't dropping they probably don't worry too much either way.

Guess the Stone trade worked out so terrible for Vegas eh. You can find tons of examples for both. Cat is also 4 years younger than Karlsson.
Vegas was a bonafide contender, something we are not, also Brannstrom's value was nowhere clear #2 OA.

Also Stone was traded in February 2019 and in 2021-22 he played just 37 games, we'll see if he bounces back in next year or if decline will follow.

I don't really give a shit about who we pick since it's basically a crapshoot. I just want Devils hockey and I have to wait 3 freaking months. :D
